Anthony Lucas injury update: USC defender out for the season
USC head coach Lincoln Riley announced Tuesday that Trojans’ defensive end Anthony Lucas will be out for the remainder of the season due to injury.
Riley said Lucas had “a lower extremity injury” and has already had a procedure done on it.
“I hate it for Anthony because he had really improved and had an impact on our defense,” Riley said.
Lucas started all six games at defensive end this season for the Trojans and had 16 tackles. USC struggled as a team to get to the quarterback and has just six sacks this season, but Lucas had shown the most promise in that regard going forward. His loss is a significant one for the Trojans and is a player who won’t be easily replaced.

Lucas appeared to suffer an injury late in the game against Minnesota, when he was helped off the field by trainers. He played against Penn State seemingly without issue until a late dive in the early fourth quarter to avoid contact with quarterback Drew Allar landed him on the ground again with trainers attending. It looked like a left ankle/lower leg injury for Lucas, who walked off the field under his own power did not return to the game. Lucas was flagged for roughing the pass on the play despite largely avoiding Allar and making very little contact.
Interestingly, Lucas began the game wearing a brace on his left knee but did not have it on for that play on which it appeared he was injured.
Lucas has one season of eligibility remaining after playing seven games in 2022 at Texas A&M, 13 last season for the Trojans and in all six this year.
