As the Trojan Marching Band Sees a Return to Many Pre-Pandemic Traditions, Heat Wave Puts a Damper on Another
At long last, a new season of USC Football has arrived. In addition to the action on the gridiron, this means the return of tailgates, kicking the flagpole, and countless other Trojan traditions. But perhaps no USC tradition is bigger than the Trojan Marching Band.
After the COVID 19 pandemic prevented the band from attending games in 2020 and eliminated many of its Game Day traditions last year, the Spirit of Troy is finally back in full force this season.
Trojan Marching Band Returns to Pre-Pandemic Traditions
One of the band’s most iconic traditions is the Friday afternoon jock rally the day before the game. Yesterday marked the first jock rally of the Lincoln Riley era. USC’s new head coach spoke at the rally, giving some words of encouragement and gratitude to the band.
In addition to jock rallies, the band’s traditional warmup at Heritage Hall and pregame march to the Coliseum will return this season. Last season, neither of those events were held due to COVID 19 protocols.

Band Will Not Wear Usual Uniforms on Saturday Due to Heat Wave
Unfortunately, however, one of the band’s Game Day traditions will have to be put on hold for a week. Yesterday afternoon, the Spirit of Troy released a statement saying that they will not be wearing their traditional uniforms on Saturday due to the heat wave in LA this weekend. Instead, they will be wearing “branded apparel that is appropriate for the extreme heat conditions.”
While it will obviously be disappointing not to see the band’s iconic uniforms on Saturday, the decision is perfectly understandable given the extreme heat conditions. Fortunately, we should see the return of the traditional uniforms next weekend when USC travels up north to face Stanford.
