BREAKING: 4-star TE Walter Matthews commits to USC
USC continues a red hot month of June on the recruiting trail. The Trojans have now landed a commitment from Hiram (Ga.) four-star tight end Walter Matthews.
The Trojans beat out the Florida Gators in a months long race for Matthews’ commitment.
Matthews is the No. 123 overall prospect and No. 9 tight end in the 2024 cycle, according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He is also the No. 18 player in Georgia.
Matthews becomes the tenth commitment in USC’s 2024 class, including being the second tight end along with Lake Oswego (Ore.) Lakeridge four-star Joey Olsen.
The duo now gives USC commitments from two On300 top-12 ranked tight ends in the 2024 cycle. The Trojans are the only team with multiple commitments in the top-12, giving USC the top tight end class in the nation to this point.

Riley was the key to USC’s success with Matthews
Landing a commitment from Walter Matthews was not an easy process but Lincoln Riley made it one towards the end.
Matthews is a big fan of Riley and his ability to call offensive plays and put players in the right positions.
“His play style he uses with his players and his background and his ability to produce with tight ends,” Matthews said previously of what stands out about Riley. “A big one I pay attention to is with Mark Andrews and how he was able to make him the player he is now.”
”Also, with coach Riley, you know you’re going to have top quarterbacks no matter when you’re at a school.”
