The USC Trojans produced a major statement win on the recruiting trail, landing a commitment from four-star defensive tackle Tomuhini Topui (Santa Ana, Calif./Mater Dei).

The 6-foot-2, 330-pound lineman initially committed to the Oregon Ducks in October of last year and was seen as a litmus test for USC head coach Lincoln Riley, General Manager Chad Bowden and defensive line coach Eric Henderson in their efforts to keep Southern California recruits home and stem the tide of top-ranked California prospects leaving for out-of-state programs. There are still eight months between now and when Topui and USC can make it official, but this is a monumental win for USC’s recruiting efforts.

Topui started to trend to USC in a big way when he both decommitted from Oregon and visited USC for the first day of Trojans’ spring ball. He was sporting a USC jacket and all signs pointed toward an eventual commitment.

“Tom Tom” is the nation’s No. 154 overall prospect and No. 15 defensive lineman in the 2026 On3 Industry Ranking and could be a key to USC landing virtually whoever they want locally as the Trojans battle for the No. 1 class in the country and already hold commitments from five of the top 21 in-state prospects.

Topui collected 42 tackles as a junior in 2024. That included 10.5 tackles for loss and 6.5 sacks. He also had an interception that he returned 50 yards for a touchdown and forced a fumble. Topui also recorded a few snaps on offense, rushing for a one-yard touchdown and catching a pass for a 14-yard score.

He is commitment No. 18 for the Trojans and joins an in-state recruiting group that includes high four-star cornerbacks RJ Sermons (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Rancho Cucamonga) and Brandon Lockhart (Los Angeles/Loyola), four-star edge Simote Katoanga (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif./Santa Margarita) and wide receiver teammate Trent Mosley, athletes Joshua Holland (Bellflower, Calif./St. John Bosco) and Madden Riordan (Pasadena, Calif./Sierra Canyon), wide receiver Ja’Myron Baker (Los Alamitos, Calif./Sierra Canyon), edge Andrew Williams (Los Angeles/John C. Fremont) and offensive lineman John Fifita (Mountain View, Calif./St. Francis).

Henderson’s group of defensive linemen continues to impress. Topui joins Williams, Katoanga, four star Braeden Jones (Chicago/Mount Carmel), four-star Jaimeon Winfield (Richardson, Texas/Richardson) and three-star lineman Malik Brooks (Downey, Calif./St. Pius X-St. Matthias Academy) as commitments with Henderson pursuing more targets.
