Bryce Young commits to USC

The Trojans added a big piece to the 2020 recruiting class with a verbal commitment from QB Bryce Young, the #1 ranked dual threat quarterback in the class.

Young played his first two years at Cathedral HS where he put up big numbers (3,431 yards and 41 touchdowns against just three interceptions as a sophomore) and had already established himself as one of the premier QB’s in the country but he transferred this off-season to Mater Dei where he will take the reins on offense for the defending national champions.

He will also be taking over at Mater Dei for JT Daniels, who reclassified after last year and will be in the thick of the QB competition for the Trojans in the fall to replace Sam Darnold.

Young (5-11, 175) has all the tools to help a team win. He throws a pretty and accurate ball, makes good decisions and doesn’t get flustered on the field. If you want a USC QB comparison from recent years I’ll go with John David Booty, who won two Rose Bowls in two years as a starter. You will hear talk of Bryce’s size at 5-11 but that’s nothing more than a talking point when discussing his overall game, the fact is the USC coaches wanted him and so did Alabama, Oklahoma, Georgia, Ohio State, Texas and Washington, among the many schools who made offers.

Randy Taylor from National Preps described Bryce this way when comparing him against other top Trinity League QB’s Ryan Hilinski and D.J. Uigalelei:

“The three QBs are so different but all elite. Young is the most complete but his size is discussed in recruiting meetings. DJ has the physical attributes all are looking for but release is a bit long at times. Ryan is the steady game manager – not a negative in my mind. As a college coach my decision would be based on the offense I’m running and the personality of the team. Picking one today, I’d go with Bryce Young because he does more things to help a team win right now.”

It will be interesting to see how the verbal from Young could impact Uigalelei, who is the #1 ranked pro-style QB in this class, but that is a question for down the road whenever D.J. is ready to make his decision. As it stands now, Bryce and D.J. are the top two QB’s in the 2020 class and Bryce decided to make it official yesterday

Bryce is the first commit for USC in the class of 2020. The Trojans currently have one QB commit for the class of 2019 in Kedon Slovis, along with the three scholarship QB’s on the roster right now (Matt Fink, Jack Sears and Daniels.
