Calen Bullock named FWAA Freshman All-American
USC standout safety Calen Bullock was named to the Football Writers Association of America Freshman All-American Team on Monday.
Bullock made an immediate impact for the Trojans as a true freshman. When starting safety Isaiah Pola-Mao was ruled out of USC’s opening game due to Covid protocols, Bullock became the first true freshman to start a season-opener at safety for USC since Su’a Cravens did so in 2013. Bullock recorded eight tackles in that game and flashed the immense potential that has him poised to become a defensive leader in 2022.
Bullock finished the 2021 season with 40 tackles, two interceptions and three pass deflections. He recorded six starts at three different positions. He started three times at free safety, two at nickel and one at cornerback. And he appeared in all 12 games.
He becomes the first USC defensive player named to the FWAA Freshman All-American team since Adoree’ Jackson in 2014.
Bullock’s Potential in 2022
The 6-foot-3, 180-pound Bullock was able to make a quick impact last season. That, despite spending the entire offseason and year trying to bulk up to meet the physical demands of college football.

But Bullock’s athleticism and nose for the football became apparent right away. So to did his versatility. Bullock looks to be a surefire star at safety, nickel or cornerback. Where he winds up moving forward will be an interesting decision for defensive coordinator Alex Grinch and defensive backs coach Donte Williams.
Last year’s starting cornerbacks Chris Steele and Isaac Taylor-Stuart have declared for the 2022 NFL Draft. So too has last year’s season-opening starter at nickel, Greg Johnson. And initial starting strong safety Chase Williams has entered the transfer portal.
It could be that Bullock and former Texas transfer Xavion Alford patrol the deep secondary for USC this season. Both saw more extensive time as the season progressed and could be seen as defensive leaders this year despite it being just their second seasons with the Trojans.
