Defensively Speaking: Cal
Watching Saturday’s game against Cal was rough duty for USC fans. But a potentially negative
outcome was fortunately prevented by an excellent offensive performance led by Caleb
Williams, driving to a tough 41 – 35 victory. This was one of those few games this
season that followed the “script” for a change. By that I mean, our well-known sporadic and
spotty defense was well and truly shored up by an offsetting dynamic and explosive offensive
performance…this was a good thing and with impeccable timing.
Our Base defense was again a 3-4 (3 DLs and 4 LBs). We used a lot more Nose Tackle (NT) with
an over look with the NT shading slightly to the strong side of the offense.
What Worked
We added a lot more slanting across the face of the O-line. The technique was intended
confuse the line calls and make for late adjustments. This was moderately successful
allowing more pressure from Tuli and Figueroa. The use of our nickel backs to pressure the
QB also worked on occasion. Essentially, we used multiple players to fill-in for the injured
starters. Nice pass interception by Bullock.

What Didn’t Work
Tackling was again a weakness which by this time of the season should be a strength
Our punt game is a serious weakness with short punts and poor hang time. This should be
an easier fix than it’s proving to be so far.
