Bear Alexander

A look at the most recent five tweets from five-star defensive tackle Bear Alexander (Ft. Worth, Tex./Brewer) show exactly how quickly recruiting can change and how, especially this year, every recruit is worth watching all the way until they are officially signed.

On June 2, the 6-foot-3, 325-pound Alexander tweeted #GoDawgs with a photo of him on his Georgia visit. The nation’s No. 26 overall prospect and No. 7 defensive lineman committed to Georgia in early February and appeared locked in with the Bulldogs. It made sense that at soon as the dead period was lifted, Alexander made his way to his future home for a visit.

The next tweet featured photos in a Texas A&M uniform, taken while on his official visit to see the Aggies. Monday morning came a statement from Alexander announcing his decommitment from Georgia, followed quickly by announcements that he would be taking official visits to Miami and USC. The visit to USC will take place June 18.

Texas A&M has to be seen as the frontrunner for Alexander now following a visit that led to his decommitment, as well as the proximity to home. But it’s also clear that Alexander is open to new experiences and seeing new things during these visits, and USC coaches have been very good about staying in touch with top targets and reacting quickly to set up visits.

Alexander would obviously be a huge addition as a massive defensive tackle who could step in and play fairly early. USC suffered a big blow when freshman defensive tackle Jay Toia entered the transfer portal recently, removing a player who looked like a future star in the interior of the defensive line. The Trojans are very thin at defensive tackle right now and USC needs to hit big with Alabama transfer Ishmael Sopsher, who was not healthy enough to participate in spring practice. Jamar Sekona and Kobe Pepe were defensive tackle additions in the 2020 class who need to step up this season.

USC is in the mix for some big-time defensive tackles in this class, but the Trojans will need to beat out some major programs. Five-star defensive tackle Mykel Williams (Columbus, Ga./Hardaway) and four-star Christen Miller (Ellenwood, Ga./Cedar Grove) will visit USC this week. Four-star Anthony Lucas (Scottsdale, Ariz./Chaparral) is the top defensive tackle in the West region and Hero Kanu (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif./Santa Margarita) has exploded onto the scene in recent months as a young transfer from Germany with terrific athleticism and just scratching the surface of what he could be as a football player. And USC will get a visit from four-star Chris McClellan (Owasso, Okla./Owasso).

USC will have McClellan and four-star defensive end Wilfredo Aybar (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire Academy) on visits the same weekend as Alexander. Safety Kamari Ramsey (Chatsworth, Calif./Sierra Canyon) and five-star athlete Gentry Williams (Tulsa, Okla./Booker T. Washington) have also mentioned taking visits that weekend.
