Former Trojan Isaiah Mobley Named MVP of NBA Summer League Championship Game
Former USC Trojan Isaiah Mobley hasn’t had the start to his NBA career that brother Evan Mobley has had. But Isaiah took a back seat to nobody in the NBA Summer League Championship Game. Isaiah was named MVP of the championship game as the Cleveland Cavaliers took down the Houston Rockets, 99-78.
Mobley had 28 points and 11 rebounds in the win. It was the second of back-to-back impressive performances. The Cavs were in the championship game largely due to Mobley’s play in the previous game. He scored 23 points and made the game-winning shot in overtime to help the Cavs beat the Brooklyn Nets 102-99.
The Cavs won the NBA Summer League championship for the first time since the event went to a championship format in 2013.
Mobley plays for the Cavs and their G-League affiliate, the Cleveland Charge, on a two-way contract last season. He played in seven games for the Cavs, averaging 7 minutes, 2.6 points and 1.7 rebounds per game.

Summer League provides an opportunity for teams to watch their rookies and young players on the edge of the roster look to get some playing time and prove themselves at this level. It featured the debuts of the top 2023 draft picks, including No. 1 overall selection Victor Wembanyama with the Spurs.
With his performance, Mobley might have put himself in position to grab a roster spot with the Cavs. He had a standout game late last season in one of his few opportunities to see big minutes. In a Cavs win at Orlando, Mobley finished with 18 points, four rebounds, three steals and two blocks in 29 minutes.
“He is a very good rotational piece on a team,” Cavs head coach J.B. Bickerstaff said in a postgame press conference following the win. “He’s even better with better players. He just has a knack for the game, an understanding for the game. He’s continued to work on his shooting, he’s improved in that area. But, similar to Evan (Mobley), they have elite IQs and have a high understanding of the game.
“Credit to their pops for teaching the game the right way. They understand it. They get it.”
