Former USC player, assistant Taylor Mays joins Washington as safeties coach
Former standout USC safety and assistant coach Taylor Mays is headed back home as he officially joined the coaching staff of the Washington Huskies on Thursday. Mays will join head coach Jedd Fisch’s staff as the safeties coach.
Mays was on the USC coaching staff for three seasons, starting as a defensive analyst. He served as the interim safeties coach late in the 2023 season as the Trojans prepared for the Holiday Bowl against Louisville. With the hiring of Doug Belk as the defensive backs coach going into the 2024 season, Mays was given the title of assistant defensive backs coach.
It’s a homecoming for Mays, who attended O’Dea High School in Seattle and signed with USC as a five-star prospect and the nation’s No. 8 overall recruit in the 2006 class.

He was a standout at safety and started 50 games over four years for the Trojans. He finishes his USC career with 276 tackles, five interceptions and 26 passes defended. He was the Pac-10 Co-Freshman of the Year in 2006 and a three-time All-American performer.
Mays is seen as a riser in the coaching world and this is an impressive job to land as his first fulltime assistant gig. The Trojans and Huskies do not play in the 2025 season but Washington will visit the Coliseum during the 2026 college football season.
