Carde Smith

The USC Trojans suffered a loss on the recruiting trail Wednesday night as four-star offensive tackle Carde Smith decommitted and officially opened back up his recruitment.

This has been an expected development for some time and does not come as a surprise. The 6-foot-6, 295-pound Smith committed to USC in early August and had been committed to Auburn before that. He’ll now look to make a third commitment and it appears Colorado and head coach Deion Sanders are well out in front for that.

On3’s Chad Simmons wrote recently that Smith “sees an opportunity to play right away in Boulder,” among other reasons for a potential flip.

Smith, the nation’s No. 227 overall prospect in the 2025 On3 Industry Ranking took an official visit to Colorado in late October. He could eventually become the second former USC commitment to pledge to the Buffs as four-star quarterback Julian Lewis looks to be leaning that way as well at this point.

Losing Smith dropped USC from No. 12 to No. 14 in the 2025 On3 Team Recruiting Rankings.

The Trojans do hold two commitments from offensive tackles. Four-star Aaron Dunn was a big flip from Utah as the 6-foot-7, 288-pound tackle checks in as the nation’s No. 185 overall prospect. And local tackle Elijah Vaikona is a very interesting developmental prospect at a massive 6-foot-8 and 370 pounds out of Santa Margarita Catholic High School. The Trojans likely aren’t done at the position either as they look for some potential flips of their own as the Dec. 4 early signing day closes in.
