Game Notes

To help you get prepared for kickoff, here are some notes about the matchup:

-This is USC’s third trip to the Cotton Bowl. Following the 1994 season, John Robinson’s Trojans blew out Texas Tech 55-14. Star wide receiver Keyshawn Johnson caught eight passes for 222 yards and three touchdowns, earning MVP honors for the game. USC’s 2017 trip to Dallas did not go nearly as well, however. That team, led by Clay Helton, fell 24-7 to Ohio State.

-Monday will mark just the third ever meeting between the Trojans and the Green Wave, and the first in over 75 years. In the 1932 Rose Bowl, USC defeated Tulane 21-12. The teams would then split a home-and-home series in the 1940s, with the visiting team winning both matchups.

-With a win over Tulane, USC can win twelve games for just the seventh time in school history. The 1972, 1978, 2003, and 2004 teams all won twelve or more games en route to national championships. In addition, despite coming up just short of a title, USC still won twelve games in both 2005 and 2008.

-Despite suffering a “significant” hamstring injury in USC’s Pac 12 Championship Game loss to Utah last month, head coach Lincoln Riley confirmed that quarterback Caleb Williams has been cleared to play in the Cotton Bowl. When Williams takes the field on Monday, he will become the first Heisman Trophy winner to suit up for the Trojans since Matt Leinart and Reggie Bush in the 2006 Rose Bowl vs. Texas.

-Monday’s game will mark the final contest in the Trojan careers of several USC seniors, including cornerback Mekhi Blackmon, offensive lineman Bobby Haskins, and wide receiver Terrell Bynum. Numerous others, including defensive lineman Tuli Tuipulotu, offensive lineman Justin Dedich, and running back Austin Jones, will have decisions to make following the game about whether to move on to the NFL or come back to USC for one more season.
