Last game for both teams

USC was dominant on the defensive end in its opening-round, 71-25 victory over UNC Greensboro. The Trojans held the Spartans to just 25 points, marking the lowest scoring total and fewest field goals made in an NCAA Tournament game by any USC opponent. The Trojans allowed just 11 points in the field half and did not give up a field goal in the second quarter. UNC Greensboro shot just 13% from the field for the game and its leading scorer, Nya Smith, had just seven points.

Mississippi State got a double-double from center Madina Okot in a 59-46 win over Cal at Galen Center in the Bulldogs’ opening-round win. The 6-foot-6 Okot scored 14 points and grabbed 13 rebounds in the win. Cal scored just five points in the first quarter and shot just 25% from the floor for the game, including 3-of-21 from three-point range. The Bulldogs had 15 steals and forced 24 turnovers. Mississippi State had 20 turnovers of its own.

Turnovers were a theme in USC’s opener as well. The Trojans had 17 steals and forced 23 turnovers, but USC didn’t play very cleanly on the offensive end itself. USC had 17 turnovers, including six by Kiki Iriafen.

The health of USC superstar JuJu Watkins will be something to watch early in this one. She rolled her ankle in the third quarter of the Trojans’ opening game, though she returned to action and shook off any thought of a lingering injury after the game. The Trojans will need her fully healthy to make the kind of run through this tournament they feel they should.

Elsewhere in the Spokane Regional 4

There have been three seed upsets in the region to this point. In the opening round, No. 9 Mississippi State beat No. 8 Cal and No. 10 South Dakota State beat No. 7 Oklahoma State.

No. 5 Kansas State beat No. 4 Kentucky in overtime to get into the Sweet 16 and potentially serve as USC’s next opponent should the Trojans take care of the Bulldogs.

No. 2 seed UConn had zero trouble with Arkansas State in the first round and will take on South Dakota State for the right to get to the Sweet 16. No. 3 Oklahoma and No. 6 Iowa will play today for the right to (very likely) take on UConn.
