Cornerback Jacobe Covington will be questionable for the USC Trojans this weekend, head coach Lincoln Riley announced Thursday.

Covington was injured late in the game against Minnesota during a punt coverage play. He was helped to the sideline and did not return to the game for what turned out to be the Gophers’ game-winning drive.

“Covington will be questionable,” Riley said. “He’s been limited this week. Progressed a little bit faster than maybe we would have thought after the game”

Riley said that immediately after the game, he would have guessed Covington would have been a “for sure no for this game,” but Riley credited the veteran cornerback and team trainers for “pushing it along.”

Covington has started all five games for the Trojans this season but the Trojans do have a pretty deep cornerback room they can rely upon. Jaylin Smith has been a standout there and the Trojans have two veteran options who could play opposite him in DeCarlos Nicholson and John Humphrey. Nicholson played a number of snaps against Minnesota while Humphrey didn’t see any action. Veteran defensive back Prophet Brown could also factor into things there for USC.

Covington has 18 tackles including one tackle for loss this season. And he’s second on the team with two pass breakups. He’s been a solid tackler on the perimeter this season for a USC defense that struggled in that capacity last season and will be tested this weekend.

USC will already likely be without linebacker Eric Gentry against Penn State. Gentry suffered an injury against Wisconsin and missed the game last weekend against Minnesota. Previously this week, Riley discussed the possibility of a redshirt year for Gentry, who is out indefinitely at this point.

The injuries will make life tougher on a USC defense likely forced to contend with a Penn State offense that will likely have running back Nick Singleton healthy and available after the talented back missed last week’s game against UCLA.
