Former USC head coach Pete Carroll made news earlier this week when he announced he would be returning to the school in a teaching capacity. Carroll was hesitant to provide specific news on what he would be doing, but it’s big news that he’ll be back on the USC campus in any capacity.

The next logical step was to wonder if there would be any crossover between Carroll and the football program. The coach oversaw one of the winningest periods in USC history, posting a 97-19 record and an undefeated season while winning four Rose Bowls and two national championships.

Riley said he’d “love to have” Carroll around the program.

“I’m excited he’s going to be here more and we’d be crazy to not take advantage of having him around,” Riley said. “So whether it’s in an official role or not, he’s made it very clear that we’ve got a good, open line of communication. It’s one that I appreciate and respect very much, and will always never hesitate to pick up the phone and call him or reach out to him because of obviously how successful he was as a coach and he’s obviously got a great knowledge of this place. So I’ve been appreciative of his help and his friendship and be glad to have him around a lot more.”

Riley said he and Carroll have been able to “catch up pretty often, check in with each other” and he’s used Carroll as a resource during his time at USC.
