USC head coach Lincoln Riley announced Monday that Dave Nichol, USC’s inside receivers coach and associate head coach for offense, is away from the team and focusing on a private medical matter.

Luke Huard, hired by USC in February as an offensive analyst, will step in as interim inside receivers coach. He will remain there indefinitely.

Huard is the younger brother of former NFL quarterbacks Damon and Brock Huard. But Luke has carved out his own path through the coaching ranks. He’s spent the past three years as an offensive analyst at Texas A&M. Prior to that, he served as co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Sacramento State in 2017 and 2018. He’s also coached at Georgia State and Illinois State.

He’ll be stepping in for Nichol, who has experience coaching at Washington State, East Carolina, Arizona, Baylor and Texas Tech. Most recently, Nichol coached inside receivers at Mississippi State.
