USC quarterback Miller Moss isn’t going to be Caleb Williams when it comes to national conversation heading into the 2024 season. Williams’ transfer from Oklahoma to USC was probably the biggest roster news of the offseason going into the 2022 season and his defense of the Heisman Trophy was one of the main talking points of this past offseason. Moss doesn’t carry that kind of weight at this point. But that doesn’t mean he’s off the radar completely.

ESPN’s Bill Connelly put together a list of his 10 most interesting quarterbacks for the 2024 college football season on Wednesday. It’s an interesting year at the quarterback position overall. Just two of the top 10 Heisman vote-getters (at any position) return to college football and there isn’t really a slam-dunk face of the sport at the position. That leaves plenty of room for someone like Moss to push his way into the conversation. And anyone who paid attention to his performance against Louisville in the Holiday Bowl has taken notice.

That’s the case for Connelly, who stuck Moss in at No. 8 on his list.

In that game against the Cardinals, when Moss completed 23-for-33 for 372 yards and six touchdowns, he did something that just six other quarterbacks did last season.

According to Connelly, Moss generated a QBR of 98 or higher with at least 30 dropbacks. He joined Jayden Daniels, Bo Nix, Noah Fifita, Dillon Gabriel and Josh Hoover. Those performances came against Florida, Georgia State, Arizona State, Tulsa and Baylor. Moss did it against a very good Louisville defense, which finished 36th in defensive SP+. And he did it in his first career start. Connelly notes that Moss completed five passes of at least 35 yards, and all five went to freshmen.

Lincoln Riley spoke recently about the state of the USC quarterback room after the Trojans added former UNLV starter Jayden Maiava via the transfer portal this offseason.

“We’re gonna let the guys in the room compete,” Riley said of the spring ball plan at quarterback. That’s a hallmark of all the great quarterback rooms that we’ve had, other great position rooms we’ve had. I think it’s been a hallmark of this program forever and ever. I think to be a starter at place like USC, you’ve got to go compete. You’ve got to go earn it. We want that to be part of every single position room, so why not do it the one that’s kind of at the center of all of this? And so absolutely, those guys are going to compete we feel like we’ve got great options in the room.”

Moss is expected to emerge out front in the race to take over for Williams. And he’s already made it clear that there’s no reason to expect less than stellar play from that position.
