Today we do our second and final sit down with Pat Ruel, Pete Carroll’s longtime offensive line
coach. Pat is, once again, a great guest. He will talk about anything, and he will say exactly
what he thinks. As Pat told me offline, he no longer has to worry about getting a job, so he can
say exactly what he thinks about everybody he has worked for and with.

And he does.

Pat gives his candid appraisal of Nick Saban, Lou Holtz, Lane Kiffin, and Steve Sarkisian.
You’ll want to hear those, particularly his discussion of Holtz. He also talks about the internal
criticisms and tensions at the end of Norm Chow’s tenure at USC. He talks about meeting with
Lincoln Riley, who Riley reminds him of, and what he thinks Riley will accomplish at USC.

We also discuss program culture and what it takes to build a successful culture. We talk about
how Pete Carroll operates differently than other successful coaches like Bill Belichick. We talk
about dealing with complacency and entitlement, and whether the downside of Pete Carroll’s culture was a tendency toward complacency.

And we talk about what it takes to be a great lineman. When you’re analyzing a potential recruit
or a college player before the draft, what should you be looking for? And what can you not do
without?

Pat is a great interview. Don’t miss it.
