The Obvious: The numbers tell a story that will be put to the test from here on out. Thus far, the No. 6 Trojans (5-0, 3-0 Pac-12) have played five games, and the combined opponents' record is 9-14. Beginning with Washington State (4-1, 1-1 Pac-12) on Saturday afternoon in the Coliseum at 4:30 p.m. PT, the combined record of future USC opponents is 21-14. Take out winless Colorado and future opponents are 21-9. In other words, the biggest challenges for the balance of the season begins this weekend against the Cougars. The Not So Obvious: The O/NSO knows that deep in the heart of most USC fans there are visions of conference championships and hopefully national championships. Easier said than done, no argument there. Even first-year head coach Lincoln Riley – to his credit – does not speak in terms of rebuilding but going for it all in his first season. This USC team is undefeated and is in the mix for big things. However, the reality is that we are all going to find out in the coming weeks whether a team with a very good offense can overcome glaring defensive deficiencies. You may not like hearing or reading about it, but that’s just telling it like it is.
