USC head coach Andy Enfield signed a phenomenal 2023 recruiting class. But he likely just landed his most impactful commitment when it comes to this coming season. Veteran guard Boogie Ellis is heading back to USC and will use his extra year of eligibility, according to Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports.

This would be absolutely massive news for the Trojans. It looked as though USC would lose its top three scorers from last year’s team as Drew Peterson and Ellis moved on and Reese Dixon-Waters entered the transfer portal.

Instead, USC would get back its leading scorer and a big-time veteran presence in Ellis. He led the team with 17.7 points per game and 83 made three-pointers. He also averaged 3.7 rebounds per game and dished out 102 assists, good for second on the Trojans.

Ellis didn’t finish the season how he wanted to against Michigan State in the NCAA Tournament. He had just six points on 3-for-12 shooting as the Spartans looked to lock him up for 40 minutes. But heading into that, Ellis was on a tear. He scored in double figures in 21 of USC’s final 23 games. And that included three 30-point outbursts. Two of those came against top-10 opponents Arizona and UCLA.

Looking Ahead to 2023-2024

His return makes the Trojans even more dangerous this coming season. USC landed at No. 16 in ESPN’s Way-Too-Early rankings for next season. And that was without including Ellis.

Kobe Johnson and Tre White are slated to return as significant contributors next season. Josh Morgan will be back as a defensive presence. And hopefully, the Trojans can get a fully healthy, full season from Vince Iwuchukwu.

And USC will welcome one of the nation’s best recruiting classes onto the roster as well. The group is led by overall No. 1 prospect, point guard Isaiah Collier. He’s expected to make an immediate and significant contribution, but having Ellis around might take some of the weight off those expectations. Four-star guard Silas Demary Jr. and forward Arrinten Page both finished as top-65 overall prospects in this class.

And oh-by-the-way, USC remains heavily in the mix for four-star guard Bronny James, the nation’s No. 27 overall prospect.
