USC hires Matt Entz as linebackers coach
USC has hired North Dakota State head coach Matt Entz as assistant head coach for defense and linebackers coach for the Trojans.
The move was announced Sunday by head coach Lincoln Riley and USC.
“Having a championship-caliber staff is instrumental to the success of our team,” Riley said. By welcoming Matt Entz, a championship-winning head coach and outstanding defensive mind, we are bolstering our defensive staff. He is going to be an excellent addition to the USC football program.
The 51-year-old Entz has served as the Bison’s head coach since the 2019 season, winning two FCS national championships in that span. Before that, he served as the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at North Dakota State since the 2014 season. The Bison defeated South Dakota in the quarterfinal of the NCAA FCS Football Championship this past Saturday. North Dakota State is scheduled to face No. 2 Montana this Saturday. Entz will remain with North Dakota State through their playoff run.

The hiring was first in a report from Logan Campbell of WDAY News.
This is the second new coach added to the defensive side of the ball for head coach Lincoln Riley this offseason. Riley and the Trojans made a splash when they hired UCLA defensive coordinator D’Anton Lynn away from the Bruins to replace Alex Grinch, who was dismissed with two games remaining in the regular season.
This is a major hire to fill an assistant coaching position. Entz is a two-time Missouri Valley Conference Coach of the Year and FCS National Coach of the Year and has the Bison looking to reach their third-straight FCS championship game. He’s spent 16 years as a defensive coordinator for Illinois College, Winona State, Northern Iowa and Western Illinois before landing at North Dakota State.
