The USC Trojans are through Day 13 of 2025 spring ball and WeAreSC has some tidbits from viewing the open portion of practice and hearing from head coach Lincoln Riley and players.

* Riley discussed the quarterback “battle” at this point in the spring.

“Jayden’s clearly the No. 1 quarterback right now,” Riley said of Jayden Maiava. “Which is not surprising at all.”

Riley said Maiava has strung together a really strong past five or six practices, showing a deeper understanding of what the team is “trying to accomplish offensively.” Riley said the quarterback has been really good in situational moments and with his decision making.

“He’s just kind of gaining momentum and gaining steam, too,” Riley said.

* More high praise for safety Bishop Fitzgerald. Riley said he had a few nice plays in a recent scrimmage and he’s been like bringing in an NFL free agent in terms of someone who has played a lot of football and has hit the ground running this spring.

* Riley said this Saturday, the final practice of the spring, will be reserved for family members of current players and recruits. After practice, they will participate in the Trojan Olympics. Riley said his biggest hope is that no staff members are put on IR afterward.

“There’s a lot of stretching going on in the John McKay Center right now,” Riley said.

* Riley was asked about players who improved the most this spring. He took a while to answer, saying it’s really difficult to pick between 100-plus players. But he listed tight end Walker Lyons, running back Bryan Jackson, offensive linemen Tobias Raymond and Justin Tauanuu, defensive lineman Kaylon Miller and running back King Miller

* USC defensive tackle commit TomTom Topui was in attendance. He’s become a regular at spring ball practices since committing to the Trojans. A few Serra standouts were there as well, including 2027 cornerback Duvay Williams and 2026 defensive lineman Khary Wilder. Former USC safety and College and Pro Football Hall of Famer Troy Polamalu was in attendance with his son Paisios Polamalu, a 2027 safety from San Diego/St. Augustin.
