The USC Trojans are through Day 2 of 2025 spring ball and WeAreSC has some tidbits from viewing the open portion of practice and hearing from head coach Lincoln Riley and several defensive players.

* Defensive tackle transfer Keeshawn Silver hasn’t been full-go through the first two days of spring ball. Riley said there isn’t an exact timeline for his return. He said they knew there would be “a little cleanup” needed in his knee when he arrived at USC and the Trojans are hoping he can do “a little bit more” toward the end of spring ball.

* Silver is one of two gigantic interior defensive line transfers the Trojans added. Jamaal Jarrett is the other. There have also been noticeable size increases in several returning linemen and the true freshmen are all physically capable of playing this year. Linebacker Desman Stephens said he’s absolutely taken note of what USC has added in front of him.

“Stacking the box with those big monsters,” he said. “I mean, they walk around the facility and they’re all the way up here (raising his hand over his head). It’s great. As linebackers, we’re damn near salivating because they’re going to open it up and we’re going to make it free. We’re going to complement each other really well.”

* Riley talked generally about this transfer portal class USC signed. He said last year’s group had to take on a huge leadership role right away and this year’s group hasn’t had to do that.

“These guys just kind of come in and work,” Riley said. “And I think some of it is the leadership around them and what was currently here has continued to better as time has gone on. It’s kind of a down-to-business type of group. They’ve done a good job acclimating themselves with the team, getting to know their teammates, all of that. But we don’t have a lot of guys who necessarily have to be at the front of the room right now, because some of that is kind of already established…We’ve been very happy with every one of the guys who have come in mid-term up to this point.”

* USC again had several big-name recruits on campus including 2026 five-star quarterback Ryder Lyons, 2026 four-star interior offensive lineman Sam Utu, four-star defensive lineman Preston Carey, four-star edge Shaun Scott, three-star defensive lineman Jake Johnson and USC commits in Brandon Lockhart and Madden Riordan.
