Two more former Trojans came out of the transfer portal on Monday, making it 11 former USC scholarship players to find new programs this offseason.

The first announcement came from offensive lineman Ty Buchanan, who is headed to Texas Tech.

The second was from running back Brandon Campbell, who committed to Houston.

Neither provided much intrigue or surprise in these developments. Buchanan had Texas Tech as one of his offers before committing to USC as part of the 2021 class. The Texas native is headed back to the Lone Star State after just a few months on the USC campus.

Campbell came to USC largely because of former running backs coach Mike Jinks. And with Jinks now the running backs coach at Houston, Campbell’s commitment was expected.

USC signed four prospects from the state of Texas in the Trojans’ 2021 recruiting class. With these departures, only tight end Lake McRee remains on the roster from that group.

These were a couple of departures that, while not catastrophic, hurt USC’s depth this spring. Campbell was going to be right in that rotation as a fourth running back alongside Travis Dye, Austin Jones and Darwin Barlow, all transfers themselves. The former four-star prospect was a real talent and a likely significant contributor in 2023 and beyond. But the move to Houston probably gives Campbell a better opportunity to see the field immediately.

Buchanan was one of three offensive linemen with eligibility remaining to hit the portal this offseason. The Trojans are down to just 13 scholarship offensive linemen this spring, with no scheduled additions at this point for the 2022 season.
