USC head coach Lincoln Riley is adding a familiar face to his coaching staff as former Oklahoma student-athlete Spencer Jones is joining the Trojans as a graduate assistant working with the wide receivers.

Jones began his college career as a wide receiver and quarterback at Liberty. In two years with the Flames he caught two passes for 33 yards and a touchdown. He transferred to Oklahoma ahead of the 2018 season. He provided depth at wide receiver and quarterback and also served as placeholder for the Sooners.

He began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Charlotte before heading to New Mexico State this past season as an offensive consultant and recruiting assistant. He now joins USC in one of the four graduate assistant positions. Jones announced that he’ll work with the Trojans’ wide receivers.

“Thankful for the opportunity this past year to be apart of such a historical season with New Mexico State,” Jones said in a social media post. “I am excited to announce that I have accepted the WR GA position for The University of Southern California! Excited to get to work!”

USC had a graduate assistant spot on offense open up with offensive line assistant Zach Crabtree moving from a graduate assistant to an analyst. Trey Tinsley is scheduled to begin his second year as a graduate assistant working with the quarterbacks. The Trojans will have two graduate assistant spots to fill on defense as well as Will Johnson was hired as cornerbacks coach at North Dakota State and Peyton Pelluer has served his two years as a grad assistant.

While USC’s defense staff saw a huge shakeup this offseason, it appears there will be plenty of continuity on offense for the second year in a row. There have been no assistant coaching changes on that side of the ball as running back coach Kiel McDonald, offensive line coach Josh Henson, outside receivers coach Dennis Simmons, tight ends coach Zach Hanson and inside receivers coach Luke Huard are all scheduled to return to USC for their third season together.
