USC defensive end Solomon Byrd will be one of the Trojans headed to the NFL combine in Indianapolis, which runs this year from February 26 through March 4.

This is a nice development for Byrd who put together a solid two-year career with the Trojans after transferring in from Wyoming ahead of the 2022 season. The 6-foot-3, 250-pound Byrd led the Trojans with 11 tackles and finished second with six sacks during the 2023 season. He had 77 tackles, including 18.5 for loss and 10 sacks during his two seasons at USC.

He was one of the guys who jumped out this past spring and that drive to make the most of his final year in college was evident. He finished this season with at least four tackles in eight of USC’s 12 games, including a season-high of seven stops against Utah.

Byrd finished by PFF as USC’s highest-graded defender among those with at least 200 defensive snaps. His 81 overall grade was by far his career-best. He was USC’s top run defender of those with at least 300 snaps, and earned the Trojans’ No. 3 pass rush grade.

Byrd was one of three Trojans to participate in the recent East-West Shrine Bowl. He recorded a sack in that game, though it was negated by an illegal contact penalty in the secondary.

It’ll be interesting to see how many USC players are invited to the NFL Combine in what activities they choose to participate. Byrd could have a chance to cement himself as a draft pick with a solid performance at the combine and/or at USC’s pro day later this spring.
