USC head coach Lincoln Riley was not at practice with the Trojans on Tuesday afternoon. It’s the second-consecutive practice Riley has missed while out with an undisclosed illness.
Riley also did not appear for his scheduled Trojans Live show on Monday evening. Host Jordan Moore said Riley wouldn’t be able to make it as he was under the weather. It’s unclear at this point how long Riley could be out. The Trojans next take the field on Saturday for a 1 pm game against Cal in Berkeley. USC needs to right the ship after two devastating losses at Notre Dame and home against Utah.
Wide receivers coach Dennis Simmons serving as acting head coach for the Trojans at this time. Simmons does have Assistant Head Coach in his title at USC.

With Riley off the field, USC is working with its compliance department to move offensive analyst Kliff Kingsbury into an on-field role, according to the LA Times. As an analyst, Kingsbury is unable to directly coach players during practices and games. Coaching staffs are limited to one head coach and 10 on-field assistants.
USC has lost consecutive games for the second time under Riley. The first came at the end of the 2022 season as the Trojans lost to the Utes in the Pac-12 Championship Game and then to Tulane in the Cotton Bowl. A win against Cal this weekend is critical if USC is going to stay alive in the Pac-12 Championship hunt. After that, the Trojans will take on the No. 5 Washington Huskies and No. 8 Oregon Ducks in back-to-back games.
