The new era of USC football has a new key piece involved.

Dave Emerick will be the new General Manager/Senior Associate Athletic Director for Football, according to his Twitter post earlier today.

“While I firmly believe that Mississippi State Football’s best days are right in front of them, it is time for me to take on a new adventure,” Emerick wrote. “I am excited to be joining the staff at USC as the General Manager/Senior Associate Athletic Director for Football.”

USC continues to add pieces to his football program this offseason. And this is a rare one that doesn’t come via the transfer portal.

There was at least one spot to fill with a role like this. The USC football program lost two important pieces this offseason.

The Trojans are set to lose Brandon Sosna to the Detroit Lions. He served as the Executive Senior Associate Athletic Director and Chief of Staff under Mike Bohn and is credited for doing a big portion of the work to get this football program on an upward trajectory. Sosna will soon head to Detroit to take over as the Lions’ Senior Director of Football Administration.

The USC football program is also losing Spencer Harris, who will slide over to Stay Doubted and BLVD to lead USC’s NIL initiative.

Adding Dave Emerick

Dave Emerick comes to USC from Mississippi State. He worked for the Bulldogs as the Senior Associate Athletic Director for Football. Emerick has been tied to Mike Leach for some time.

He worked with Leach for six years at Texas Tech. Emerick then spent two years at Arizona before joining up with Leach again at Washington State in 2012. He has a recruiting background due to his time at Arizona, where he served as director of on-campus recruiting and assistant director of operations. Emerick then went with Leach from Washington State to Mississippi State and oversaw the recruiting efforts for the Bulldogs as well.

All told, he’s been with Leach for 18 years.

Riley and Emerick have a history together as well. Emerick started at Texas Tech in 2004, first serving as unit coordinator before taking over as director of player personnel and then chief of staff. Riley was with the Red Raiders as a student assistant from 2003-05 and then as a graduate assistant and wide receivers coach through the 2009 season, when both went elsewhere. Emerick went to Arizona and Riley to East Carolina.

This is a gigantic hire for USC football due to the importance of the position. Annie Hanson has taken over the recruiting department and seemingly has things running like clockwork there. Emerick will be charged with doing that for the football program as head coach Lincoln Riley’s right-hand man.

Riley continues to overhaul the USC football program since taking over as the Trojans’ head coach late last year. He’s another stamp on the program. And another signal that USC is all in on providing Riley the resources he needs to win.
