USC linebacker Mason Cobb and cornerback Jaylin Smith both sat out the Trojans’ 48-0 win against Utah State this past weekend. Head coach Lincoln Riley confirmed following Tuesday’s practice that he expects them both to be ready to go and active for USC’s next game.

“Mason’s really progressed well, having the week off was good for him,” Riley said. “Jaylin was a late scratch in the game, was really close to being able to play but we decided to play that one a little bit smart.”

Cobb was listed as questionable on the injury report heading into the game and did not suit up. Smith was not listed and was in uniform on the sideline throughout but never entered the game.

Linebacker Eric Gentry started in place of Cobb and tied for the team lead with seven tackles, including 1.5 tackles for loss and a sack. Cornerback John Humphrey started in place of Smith. He finished with one tackle and was targeted just two times on passes, allowing one reception for three yards.

Despite missing two players who started in the season-opening win against LSU, the USC defense was again outstanding against Utah State. The Trojans held the Aggies to just 190 total yards while keeping them off the scoreboard completely.

USC will have this bye week to get as healthy as possible before a monumental game against Michigan in Ann Arbor. It will be the Trojans’ first Big Ten conference game in history and an opportunity to get a second marquee win in this 2024 season. The Michigan offense has struggled in early-season games against Fresno State and Texas. But USC will need to be at its best in all three phases to come up with a road win in The Big House.
