USC offensive lineman Ty Buchanan enters the transfer portal
USC offensive lineman Ty Buchanan entered the transfer portal on Thursday. The Trojan tackle was entering his first spring ball and second season at USC. He did not see the field as a true freshman last season.
Buchanan signed with USC in the 2021 class as a three-star prospect out of Corpus Christi (Tex.) Calallen High School. USC signed 22 high school prospects in the 2021 class and Buchanan now becomes the sixth to transfer out.
Buchanan held offers from Colorado, Oklahoma State, Purdue and Texas Tech before committing to USC in October of 2020. The 6-foot-7, 290-pound offensive lineman was not likely to factor into the playing time rotation this season. But he showed some promising signs during practices last fall and could have been a valuable piece moving forward.
Buchanan joins fellow Texas prospects in running back Brandon Campbell and Joseph Manjack IV as 2021 USC signees to enter the portal this offseason. Defensive tackle Jay Toia transferred to UCLA last year. Quarterback Jaxson Dart and tight end Michael Trigg made their way to Ole Miss this offseason.
USC’s Offensive Line Situation
Buchanan’s departure is another knock on the former staff when it comes to offensive line recruiting. The USC staff did a phenomenal job in 2017, landing a group that included first-round NFL draft picks in Austin Jackson and Alijah Vera-Tucker, along with valuable starters Andrew Vorhees, Brett Neilon and Jalen McKenzie. But USC’s 2018 class included just two offensive linemen — one of whom has transferred out. The 2019 class had just two offensive linemen. The 2020 class has already lost one of its six offensive line signees. And now the 2021 class has lost one of its three signees.

That means the USC roster features just 10 offensive linemen signed out of high school by USC over the past four years. USC’s 2022 class does not yet have a high school offensive lineman signed, though the Trojans remain in the mix for four-star tackle Josh Conerly Jr.
The offensive line is a position USC is expected to hit in the transfer portal moving forward. The Trojans might be fine as far as starters go this season, but depth is starting to be tested and the Trojans are slated to lose several veteran starters after the 2022 season.
USC’s Transfer Portal Movement
Those six from the 2021 signing class are joined by 14 other Trojans to hit the portal this offseason. Some of the losses have been offset by 13 new arrivals via the transfer portal.
Quarterback Caleb Williams was the headliner, replacing both Dart and Kedon Slovis.
