WeAreSC Recruiting Roundup with Scott Schrader & Dylan Brashier (9/19)

Each week me and our impressive intern from USC’s Anneneberg School of Communications hop on Zoom to record our USC Recruiting Roundup. At that time we recap some of the interesting USC storylines of the week for our YouTube audience.
Our primary focus is on recruiting, but we’ll also touch on other topics each week.
In this USC Recruiting Roundup, WeAreSC’s Scott Schrader and Dylan Brashier discuss:
Scott’s Recent Travels – Elijah Newby
Cheshire (CT) Academy 4-Star Linebacker Elijah Newby was a late addition to the June 2-4 USC Official Visitor list. Other than knowing USC offered Newby a scholarship back in March, there wasn’t much buzz about him and the Trojans until May.
USC Outside Linebackers Coach Roy Manning visited Newby early in the Spring, so we knew he was a priority. There just hadn’t been much coverage on him. In fact, WeAreSC hadn’t communicated with Newby until after his USC official visit.
Our first contact came Sunday afternoon and our first two questions were, will you be back to USC at some point and how soon to you plan to commit?
“I’m planning on coming back very soon,” Newby said. “I will be making a decision after I evaluate all my opportunities. Hopefully by the end of this month.”
2023 USC defense
Although USC hasn’t played a really good football team yet, the defense has looked vastly improved from a year ago. Far from perfect, but definitely far better than last season. At least thus far.
“The defense is unbelievable,” Newby said. “They got so many guys out there just flying around, having fun. That’s the most important part, they all having fun. They’re fast and like to fly around. That’s the most important part to me. And I’m a pretty fast guy, so I think I can fit in.”

USC Coaches on the Road Recruiting
There were four separate USC coaches on the road recruiting last weekend.
Outside linebackers and assistant Head Coach Roy Manning were on the same path as Scot. He first stopped in Maryland to check in on Jaylen Harvey, who USC is working to land a commitment from. Although a date’s not set yet for Harvey to announce his school choice, he should be visiting Penn St. next weekend and then announcing soon after. Right now, we believe the Trojans are the clear leader, but he’s still got another visit to a school he’s been very high on for several years.
On Friday, Manning will travel to Connecticut to see Elijah Newby.
Staying on the topic of defensive lineman, Shaun Nua will be out to see another 2024 target in Jericho Johnson, who is playing in Sacramento on Thursday night.
On the offensive side of the ball, there will be two coaches on the road.
Offensive line coach Josh Henson will earn his miles this week, first seeing USC commit Jason Zandamela in Florida, then making his way to Texas to see USC commit Makai Saina.
Tight ends coach Zach Hanson will also make a cross country trek to see USC commit Walter Matthews.
