Game Notes

To help you get prepared for kickoff, here are some notes about the matchup:

-USC has faced Cal 107 total times, more than the Trojans have played any other opponent. USC leads the all-time series over the Bears 71-32-4.

-Last season’s meeting between the two teams was a rather bizarre one, with Cal defeating the Trojans 24-14. The game was originally scheduled to be played on November 13, but it was postponed due to a COVID outbreak within the Bears’ program. The contest instead took place on December 4, six days after USC had hired Lincoln Riley as their new head coach. Riley was on the road recruiting and not at the game; interim head coach Donte Williams led the Trojans for the final time.

-This will be Cal’s first trip to the Coliseum since 2018. (The 2020 game between the two programs was cancelled due to the COVID 19 Pandemic.) The Bears won that game 15-14, despite having under 100 passing yards and just 207 yards of total offense. The loss snapped a 14-game winning streak for USC against Cal dating back to 2004. In addition, it marked Cal’s first win at the Coliseum since 2000, ending an eight-game streak.

-USC is looking for its eighth win of the season, which would match its highest win total of the past five years. The Trojans have not won more than eight games in a season since 2017.

-Cal head coach Justin Wilcox served as USC’s defensive coordinator in 2014 and 2015. However, he was not retained following the dismissal of Steve Sarkisian and the promotion of Clay Helton to permanent head coach at the conclusion of the 2015 season.
