WeAreSC On3 11/29/22: Shillelagh Returns, Packing the Coli, and a Big Anniversary
WeAreSC On3 is a daily three-point briefing recapping news and notes surrounding USC Athletics. Today, we take a look at the Jewled Shillelagh returning to Heritage Hall, USC fans packing the Coliseum for the Notre Dame game, and a big anniversary.
Shillelagh Returns
Following USC’s victory over Notre Dame on Saturday, the Jewled Shillelagh is officially back in Heritage Hall.
This marks the first time since 2016 that USC has had possession of the historic rivalry trophy. After winning seven straight games against the Fighting Irish from 2002 through 2009, Saturday was just the Trojans’ fourth victory over their bitter rivals since then.
Packing the Coli
Saturday’s game at the Coliseum had an announced attendance of 72,613. This marked by far the most fans at a USC home game since the Coliseum began its renovation in 2018.

Beyond tangible attendance numbers, however, there was a buzz inside the stadium Saturday evening that had been lacking around USC for the better part of a decade. Many longtime attendees said that it felt much like back in the Pete Carroll era, when Trojan fans used to fill the Coliseum on a weekly basis.
With USC fans finally having a football team that they can be proud of again, it makes sense that the fans are starting to show back up.
A Big Anniversary
One year ago yesterday, college football insider Bruce Feldman sent out an eye-raising tweet.
Sure enough, later that day, Lincoln Riley was officially announced as USC’s new head coach.
A year later, USC is 11-1, on the verge of the College Football Playoff, and likely has the Heisman Trophy winner at quarterback. Meanwhile, Oklahoma is 6-6 and headed for a lower-tier bowl game.
Happy anniversary, coach!
