WeAreSC On3 12/6/22: Caleb to New York, Injury Updates, and Transfer Mania
WeAreSC On3 is a daily three-point briefing recapping news and notes surrounding USC Athletics. Today, we take a look at Caleb Williams officially being named a Heisman Trophy Finalist, Lincoln Riley providing injury updates on several key USC players, and Transfer Mania hitting college football.
Caleb to New York
What had long been assumed is now official: Caleb Williams is a Finalist for the Heisman Trophy. The USC quarterback was one of four players—all QBs—to earn an invite to Saturday’s Heisman Trophy Presentation in New York. The other three are TCU‘s Max Duggan, Ohio State‘s CJ Stroud, and Georgia‘s Stetson Bennett IV.
Williams is the only one of those four players whose team will not be playing in the College Football Playoff. Hence, he will look to become just the second Heisman winner to play on a non-playoff team since college football’s current postseason format was introduced in 2014. The only other player to do so was Lamar Jackson of Louisville, who won the award in 2016.
Injury Updates
While Williams will head to New York this coming weekend, his status for the Cotton Bowl against Tulane is still up in the air. During a Zoom press conference on Sunday, head coach Lincoln Riley revealed that Williams suffered a “significant hamstring injury” during Friday’s Pac 12 Championship Game loss to Utah. Riley said that they will continue to track Williams’s status as the game gets closer.
Riley also revealed that center Brett Neilon will miss the Cotton Bowl after suffering a lower leg injury against the Utes. It marks an unfortunate end to a standout USC career for Neilon, who is in his sixth and final year of eligibility.
