WeAreSC On3 9/22/22: Alex Grinch Rumors, Updated Bowl Projections, and Message from Bohn
WeAreSC On3 is a daily three-point briefing recapping news and notes surrounding USC Athletics. Today, we take a look at rumors surrounding USC defensive coordinator Alex Grinch and the head coaching vacancies at Nebraska and Arizona State, CBS Sports releasing their updated bowl projections, and a message from USC Athletic Director Mike Bohn.
Alex Grinch Rumors
Although we are less than a month into the college football season, two Power Five coaching jobs, have already come open: Nebraska and Arizona State. And according to Pete Thamel of ESPN, USC defensive coordinator Alex Grinch is reportedly a candidate for both of those jobs.
Grinch came to USC from Oklahoma alongside Lincoln Riley, where he was the defensive coordinator for three seasons. Through three games this year, Grinch’s USC defense is averaging just under 20 points allowed per game.
Updated Bowl Projections
With three full weeks of college football action now in the book, CBS Sports recently updated their bowl projections. And the latest predictions certainly feature an intriguing matchup for USC.
Right now, CBS Sports projects the Trojans to play Appalachian State in the Cotton Bowl. The Mountaineers became America’s favorite Cinderella story after they went into College Station in week two and stunned Texas A&M.

Last weekend, Appalachian State captured the country’s hearts yet again when they took down Troy on a crazy hail mary as time expired. If the Mountaineers keep winning, they may just get their shot at a different group of Trojans at the end of the season.
Message From Bohn
Through the first two home games of the 2022 season, USC has seen a significant increase in attendance over the past few years. Yesterday, Athletic Director Mike Bohn took to Twitter to share his gratitude for the fans who have helped to fill the Coliseum so far this year.
USC’s home game against Fresno State last weekend drew more than 67,00 fans. This marked the second-largest home crowd since the Coliseum’s capacity was reduced from 93,000 to 77,000 in 2018. In addition, it was the largest crowd for a USC nonconference home game since the Trojans hosted Texas in 2017.
