Wesley Yates III announces commitment to USC Trojans
Eric Musselman landed another offseason addition to the USC roster as shooting guard Wesley Yates III announced his commitment to the Trojans out of the NCAA transfer portal.
Yates spent one injury-filled season at Washington before announcing his intention to enter the transfer portal in early April. Yates suffered a broken foot during a pre-season practice and then re-injured it when he tried to come back mid-year.
Prior to enrolling at Washington, Yates was rated as a four-star prospect and the No. 50 overall recruit in the 2023 class, according to the On3 Industry Rankings. He checked in as the No. 12 shooting guard in his class and the No. 4 overall player in the state of Texas, hailing from Beaumont (TX) Beaumont United.

There is plenty of familiarity between the USC coaching staff and Yates. Musselman added former Washington assistants Will Conroy and Quincy Pondexter to his staff this offseason. Beyond that, Pondexter and Yates are cousins. The 6-foot-4, 200-pound Yates is another athletic to this USC roster and he brings four years of eligibility with him.
Looking back at him as a recruit, his On3 Scouting Evaluation read:
“Wesley Yates is a strong framed guard who plays with a lot of confidence. He is efficient on the ball, taking care of possessions. Yates has deep range on his jump shot and is comfortable off the bounce or the catch. His release point is a little low, which leads to some inconsistencies, but the release is clean and repeatable. Yates has a strong handle, his understanding of change of paces gets him to his spots in the half-court. He is an average athlete, vertically and horizontally, but he competes and has toughness. Yates is a noted gamer and wants the ball in his hands.”
