Can Michigan Make it to the 2024 Big Ten Championship?

Tweets Of The Day

Today (Thursday, May 9) at Ferry Field on the University of Michigan athletic campus, a World Athletics Heritage Plaque will be unveiled to commemorate Jesse Owens further set four world records in a 45-minute snap May 25, 1935. The ceremony is open to all fans.

From a Michigan press release:

The presentation occurs one day before U-M hosts the Big Ten Conference Track & Field Championships for the first time at the U-M Track & Field Stadium and for the first time on campus since 1988.

The World Athletics Heritage Plaque is a global location-based recognition that highlights, celebrates and links iconic and historic athletics competitions, careers, performances, cities, venues, landmarks and culture worldwide.

The World Athletics Heritage Plaque is awarded for “an outstanding contribution to the worldwide history and development of the sport of track & field athletics and of out-of-stadia athletics disciplines such as cross country, mountain, road, trail and ultra-running, and race walking.”

The plaque will be revealed by Marlene Dortch, the granddaughter of Owens, along with representatives of the Michigan and Ohio State track & field teams.

Looking back on the historic performances, at 3:15, Owens won the 100 yards in a record-tying 9.4. Ten minutes later, he took his only long jump of the day, adding 6 inches to the world record with his 26-8.25 (8.13m).

At 3:45, he ran the 220-yards, and sliced 0.3 off the world record with his 20.3. That mark actually counted for two world records, as the race was a few inches longer than the 200-meter international standard and bettered that mark as well.

Finally, at 4 pm, he ran the 220-yard low hurdles in 22.6, slashing 0.4 off that world record, again getting credit for the 200m mark. Owen’s long jump record lasted 25 years.

The next, Owens won an unprecedented four gold medals at the Berlin Olympics, a major triumph at a Games that the ruling Nazis had hoped would be a demonstration of white supremacy.

Michigan athletics appointed NFLPA executive Terése Whitehead as its in-house Altius NIL executive general manager. Altius Sports Partners and Michigan have been collaborating on NIL efforts.

Michigan basketball has offered Baltimore (Md.) Sidwell Friends School 2025 four-star point guard Acaden Lewis, the No. 89 overall player in the country per the On3 Industry Ranking.

As part of his rap battle with Drake, Kendrick Lamar released a diss track named ‘Not Like Us.’ Michigan football used it as a reminder that the rest of the country isn’t like the Wolverines, who are the reigning national champions.

Quote Of The Day

“He’s just a really good downhill runner. He can also make you miss in space. He can run away from you. I think one of his under appreciated skills is his ability to catch the ball out of the backfield and be a receiver. You can use him in the pass game as well. His skillset transitions to being a three-down running back. He’s one of those guys that you don’t have to take out of the game.”
