The Crimson Countdown is officially on for the 2023 Oklahoma football season. It’s the second season under head coach Brent Venables and expectations are high once again. The Sooners are looking to rebound from the uncharacteristic 6-7 season in 2022.

Every day as we get closer to kickoff, SoonerScoop.com will count down the days with you. Starting with No. 99 and working our way to No. 0, we’ll be there every step of the way.

Crimson Countdown: No. 23 Jasiah Wagoner

2022 stats: N/A

2023 outlook:

Oklahoma cornerbacks coach Jay Valai’s description of what he’s looking for at his position fits freshman cornerback Jasiah Wagoner to a tee. When talking about instant impact contributors, Wagoner checks a number of boxes.

After making a strong impression on coaches and teammates during the spring as an early enrollee, it’s been more of the same the first few weeks of preseason camp.

“I think Jasiah’s a pit bull. Like, whenever the ball comes his way, he’s going to get it. He’s violent at the point of attack. He’s just a dog. He’s a pit bull. You can see it, not only in practice but in the film room. He’s competing to make sure that when Coach is asking questions, he’s answering it first and just doing things like that,” said Woodi Washington.

There’s a bright future ahead for Wagoner and he may be getting his name called sooner than expected.

2023 cornerback outlook:

Cornerback is a room full of opportunity as C.J. Coldon and Jaden Davis departures leaves the opposite cornerback spot of Woodi Washington up for grabs. Gentry Williams is believed to be the odds on favorite to win the job but Wagoner along with JUCO transfer Kendel Dolby should add depth to the room. While Kani Walker, Makari Vickers and Jayden Rowe fight for playing time as well.
