That sensation you just felt is Franklin’s hot seat.

With the playoff expanding to twelve teams, expectations get adjusted for everyone, not only Franklin. There are no longer any acceptable excuses for not making it. And at some point, probably not immediately, making it and consistently exiting in the early rounds won't be good enough either (fundamentally it's the same as making and losing a non-playoff NY6 bowl).

Mid-December this year: We Are!…#13!

Nonsense- the teams with the most talent will be the teams with the highest payrolls- the game we knew is gone.
So the bagmen will understand this and be "fair" to a coach who doesn't make the playoffs? Or maybe they'll realize that they shared the blame and will pony up more cash. Worked that way for Jimbo Fisher. Oh, wait........

If you're going to rate a coach, you have to take it into account. What the bagmen will do is what the bagmen will do.

In my next life I want to coach and get fired with 5 years left on my contract… have someone pay me $30 million to NOT go to work. BTW…. Franklins buyout drops to 56 million on Jan 1, 2025
Exactly! I said for years that I wanted to be the backup QB for the San Diego Chargers. Good money, little chance of getting hurt, living in San Diego. Give me a clipboard and a baseball cap. Perfect.

This entire thing is about to become very complicated.

With NIL and the portal, I still think you have only 3 to 4 schools who can win it all and the rest are just there so the “lower seeded” schools and tv can profit off the fans. Some higher seeds are absolutely going to destroy some of these lower seeds. I am concerned for the lower seeds that more games mean more injuries and more reasons for opt outs early on. Most of these teams will get embarrassed after the first round or so.

I still don’t trust the committee or whoever it is to not play bracketology with the matchups. I don’t think you get a true Cinderella very often unless Bama or USC gets seeded 10th and somehow that counts.

I have no idea what this PSU team does next year. On paper the roster looks like a top ten team. However the coaching is a hot mess with new assistants everywhere, other teams ahead of PSU who should have taken a step back actually moved further ahead thanks to NIL and portal, and without Drew becoming the man and Saquon-ing us to wins despite Franklin, this team is likely destined for that despised 10-2, 9-3 mark.

What a failure! How could he show his face at a family reunion?

That's a very real possibility. And if it happens, ESPN will cry every time it writes a check to the College Football Playoff. Even in a four-team format, the ratings are all over the place and that's not good when selling advertising slots.

I would say that depends primarily on the development of #15.
I say that with heavy heart. I think they have significant losses and although Fleming helps, their wideout room is still lacking. How many losses do you think you can have to squeeze in? Can you get in with 3 losses? I don’t think so.

A more realistic one is...accomplished and independently wealthy or like those of us who feel empowered to critique them.
There are more than a handful of head coaches who are independently wealthy (unless they are totally profligate) and haven't accomplished much other than becoming independently wealthy.

I'll take that any day of the week and twice on Sunday.

So coaching is a lot like politics.

That sensation you just felt is Franklin’s hot seat.

Didn’t feel a thing. Saw that Day and Riley were on the list too. Long gone are the days where someone is an assistant coach for 17 years and takes 16 years to win his first National Championship as head coach.

Day is certainly on the hot seat. OSU is loaded for bear and unless Day wins the Big Ten championship and/or makes a deep playoff run there is a good chance he's gone.

There are some grumblings abut Riley's first two years, but at $80mm he's too expensive to fire now.

and do less damage

Difference between Franklin/college coaches and any politician is you can vote a politician out of office if you don't like the results and they (most of the time) won't take $50mm with them.
