”INDIANAPOLIS -- NCAA president Charlie Baker said he is not in favor of rules or federal laws that would place new limits on the way college athletes transfer between schools.

During a wide-ranging, hourlong interview with ESPN on Tuesday, Baker harbored no sympathy for the many coaches who have publicly complained about the difficulties they have in maintaining stable rosters in the new college sports environment that carries fewer restrictions on player transfers and allows for name, image and likeness deals that have proved to be incentives for players to consider changing teams.

"I've had conversations with a bunch of coaches who didn't ... walk out on their contracts," Baker said. "One of the things I hear from kids when I talk to them about this issue is, 'Coaches walk out on their contracts. What about us?'"

Baker said he thinks the rate of transfers in college sports reflects a larger trend of all college students changing schools more frequently than in the past.

"Do they transfer more than they did ten years ago? Yes. Do they transfer more than their peers who aren't student-athletes? No," Baker said. "... They actually transfer less than students who aren't student-athletes do, and kids just transfer more because they have more information, more data, and they're more impatient about a lot of things."”

I guess unf*cking this thing isn’t the goal. Might as well keep the race to the bottom running. Won’t be long anyway.

Players are the wrong target. The NCAA should consider limits or constraints against greedy P4 coaches who dump their schools and players for a better financial deal elsewhere.

No chance in hell that happens.

We've already passed the bottom. All they are doing now is digging the grave deeper and throwing the dirt on top of themselves until the whole sport will be a distant memory....

I agree, let players transfer every year! Maybe the NCAA could set up a schedule of schools each player can transfer to! Only condition to transfer is to repay the school you leave 50% of the cost of the original schools investment in tuition, room and board, and player development. Either the player or the receiving school can pay. I always hear how coaches can up and leave...so why not the players? Oh yea, coaches have a buy out so why not the players?

Blanket one-year free agency is not sustainable for any aspect of this or any sport, imo. Professional sports figured that out when free agency became the norm. Fans will get frustrated if it gets too much crazier, and as fans are the source of funding one way or another, that just ignores foresight and flies in the face of common sense.

I think this also leads directly to college athletes, or maybe at least those in Div 1, being employees, signing contracts with structure around xfers and NIL. It is apparent we need to contractually impose common sense in those areas.

I hope I'm wrong in this and some knight in shining armor comes galloping in to save the day. I thought that might have been Baker, but so far, nope.

Div. 1A College Football cannot break away from the NCAA fast enough for me. Dump the conferences and start over like we're just inventing the overall structure of the sport. That means being able to set aside life-long held assumptions and "we've always done it that way". Easier said than done.
