Nebraska football coach Matt Rhule had a cautious message for fans -- and not just at Nebraska -- looking for a quick fix, especially at quarterback.

After a season in which three Cornhuskers quarterbacks made appearances in at least five games, Rhule was asked if he planned on addressing the position in the transfer portal.

"Make no mistake that a good quarterback in the portal costs, you know, a million to $1.5 million to $2 million right now, just so we're all on the same page," Rhule said Wednesday while discussing the state of the program with reporters. "Let's make sure we all understand what's happening. There are some teams that have $6 [million] or $7 million players playing for them."

Rhule, who closed out his first season with the Cornhuskers with a 5-7 record, said he was not opposed to finding players in the portal. Last year, the Huskers took quarterback Jeff Sims, who started 23 games over three years at Georgia Tech, although Sims started just two games for Nebraska this year, throwing one touchdown and six interceptions.

But Rhule said he'd prefer to find and develop his own players.

"We just kind of believe in doing things the old-school way, the hard way -- building," Rhule said.”

I like Rhule and agree with his point of view, but good luck with that.

I think most D1 coaches feel the same way, in terms of preferring to build their roster the traditional way of recruiting high school prospects over building via the portal. That said, the portal can be a quick solution in terms of addressing deficiencies on a roster that exist due to injuries, poor advancement (in the weight room, in the classroom, or in elevating their game against college players) of recruits, or players electing to leave a team via the portal when compared to traditional recruiting.

It’s far too soon to judge Matt at Nebby. Year three (2025) might be better.

He seems to be attracting some quality, yet under the radar, talent.

Dabo Swinney has also said as much and I agree with the approach philosophically. But today's reality pretty much necessitates being active in the portal.

Look no further than Oregon, Washington, LSU, Oregon State this year, and USC, UK, Texas, & ND (last year) for teams heavily impacted by transfer QBs. It makes a lot of sense to try to get one IMO - everyone says they're not afraid of competition until they're riding the pine. Why in the world would Arch Manning want to sit another year behind Quinn Ewers?
