See the link below. From the article:

”BROOKLYN, Ohio -- An Ohio high school football coach resigned Monday after his team used racist and antisemitic language to call out plays during a game last week.

Brooklyn High School coach Tim McFarland and his players repeatedly used the word "Nazi" as a playcall in a game against Beachwood High School. Beachwood, a Cleveland suburb, is roughly 90% Jewish, according to the latest survey, published in 2011, by the Jewish Federation of Cleveland.

The Brooklyn team stopped using the term in the second half of the game after Beachwood threatened to pull its players from the field, according to a statement from Beachwood Schools Superintendent Robert Hardis. However, several Brooklyn players continued to direct racial slurs at Beachwood players during the game, the statement read.

McFarland handed in his notice of resignation Monday morning. Brooklyn Schools Superintendent Ted Caleris said in a statement that McFarland "expresses his deepest regret" and that he and the school apologize for "hurtful and harmful speech" that will "not be tolerated."”

A$$holes.

Sometimes I try to understand how an adult could have such a lack of taste and sensitivity to use a threatening and hurtful word, to a group of HS kids no less.
Close to unfathomable, but things like this are reported all the time.

Agree. I think that enough time has passed that World War two is like Napoleon, the indian wars or Cleopatra. It is just a chapter in a dusty history book. As I understand it, they've used this play call "Nazi" all year but it was just called out when they played a team from a predominantly Jewish area. I can't imagine nobody pulled the coach aside earlier and said that they need to tap the breaks on that a bit.

The idea of using that word for a playcall is almost understandable when you read that they were using racial slurs.

My first thought as a retired AD and still active league coordinator is....was the coach a teacher? While we all certainly know that being a certified teacher does not mean a guarantee of good judgement.... my decades of experience tell me that this sort of stupidity is more likely when you promote the successful Pop Warner Coach and his backround is .....well not education.
Hiring someone who is not full time in the district is risky as their only frame of reference is in the program they run. There are many moving parts in a school district and athletics, while the most visible component, should always be kept in the proper perspective. Teacher or not......any adult like this should never be around students.

They missed so many other great play call nomenclature.
1. Socialist sweep left.
2. Conservative screen right.
3. 1917 Communist trap.
4. Capitalist QB IPO draw.
What they did was obviously repugnant, but honestly do you think the players kept this to themselves and no one in the community knew? Someone should have raised the alarm immediately.

Agreed. From his photo, he looks to be very young. Perhaps in his late 20s, is my guess. So, again, may feel that WW2 is ancient history like the Spartans or Trojans. Secondly, as I understand it (but could be wrong), it was a play call that was being made like Payton yelling "Omaha!". I don't know if it was from the sideline or QB but doubt anyone outside the team knew it and if they heard it from the stands, they probably thought they were saying something else.

The Nazis weren't like the Spartans or Trojans. Anyone who doesn't know the difference is ignorant beyond belief.

Wow, yeah. Not sure how that comparison works.

If anything, this seems more like the gallows humor that's so prominent with kids now.

Of the many Jewish folks I have met and known, I cannot imagine even one of them feels the systemic slaughter of 6 million people under the rule of a madman because of their religion is just another forgettable chapter in a dusty old history book. I cannot even imagine anyone, regardless of their personal religion or beliefs or depth of character, and with any sense of empathy and caring for humanity, can discard that chapter if they give it even a couple seconds of thought below the "headline".

I don't dispute how people, especially young people, relate to history, but boy it can be both alarming and depressing at times. I have more than 10 years to retirement and yet my father and step-father both served in WW2, so the history seems more tangible and the loss and sacrifice experienced hits closer to home. I'm glad to hear that there will be follow up, as the worst outcome would be for some of these kids to come out of this feeling like they or their coach were victims of some form of political correctness.

well, you may want to do some research on the Spartans and Trojans. Certainly not to dismiss the horrific nazis but if you think the Spartans and Trojans were nice people you don't understand their history. For example, they would take unruly slaves and lock them up. Then had a "party" where teen kids killed the slaves in a public setting.

Again, not to dismiss Nazis or this coach. Just that teams calling themselves "Spartans" or "Aztecs" do the same thing.

So, you really make my point. The savagery of civilizations and cultures is lost over time. Nazis were no longer in any power in 1944. That is almost 80 years ago. Few are alive who lived when Nazis had power. Ensuing generations forget. It is up to us to make sure they don't forget. This coach apparently did.

17million, the estimated number of non-combatants butchered by the Nazis and their accomplices. So as far as research goes, don't even bother because you're not going to come close.

Well, my point wasn't to excuse nazis. Far from it. I am well aware of the horrors of the Nazis. Just stating that kids don't get it. It is ancient history to them.

Twenty states require Holocaust education, three encourage it. Ohio is not one of them.

That aside, one would like to think that there is a chapter about World War 2 in some mandated world history course.

Would love to hear the rejected names before they settled on nazi.
Apparently, this was a call the QB used when he, at the LOS, "blitz" coming. Of course, the reference is to a "blitzkrieg". It was a code word to tell the offense the QB was changing the call. They are claiming that it was used all season and when the opposing team brought it up, he changed it and apologized to the other coach. Also, they are using a document from the 90's from a coaching clinic recommending this call out.

Don't shoot the messenger. Just pointing out the defense of the coach.

So the coach offered this up in his defense? "Oh, gee, I got it from somewhere else." He should be fired for terminal stupidity.

"I got it from high school coaching for dummies" is probably the single worst defense I've ever heard.

Someone needs to make sure this guy doesn't reproduce. Just let him go to the Woody Wagon as OSU tailgates like the rest of the mouth breathers.
