Indiana’s art museum got its $30MM makeover a few years back with at least half the cost paid from a single donation, and it’s now over 100,000 sf. Reno was overseen by PSU Art History undergrad who was my HS friend and PSU roommate for two years (Brown PhD).

PSU is slated to spend more than that - much more than that - just to "repurpose" (not renovate) the existing (old?) Palmer Museum. For what purpose? Who knows.
When the final tally is in, I would expect the total real cost of that decision will be roughly $150 Million (within rounding error, anyway)

That said, you can't put a price tag on the impact of 500,000 annual visits from world-wide art patrons.
Certainly not without involving math - and LionJim isn't available.

See the link below for the article and video. From the article:

”UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — As the Palmer Museum of Art at Penn State celebrates its 50th anniversary, the Palmer looks ahead to a bright future in a new building at the Arboretum. A newly released fly-through animation offers an immersive 3D view of the $85 million facility. The Palmer created the two-and-a-half-minute video in collaboration with Allied Works and the Brooklyn Digital Foundry. The 71,254-square-foot facility will open in spring 2024.

The Palmer’s new building, designed by Allied Works, will double the museum’s exhibition space to 20 galleries; improve accessibility; bring inviting, natural light into the museum; and include the Palmer’s first educational and event spaces, a museum store and café, sculpture path, and outdoor terraces.”

I’m glad that they never miss an opportunity to cite the cost of the new museum.
$85,000,000 for that? Mussolini would love it. What a waste of money.

I hope they eventually recoup the investment put into the new building. But I just hate the way it looms large over the Arboretum and overshadows the serenity and beauty of that space as I'm walking in from the parking lot.
I assume that was location was deemed the best choice by the experts regardless of how it impacted the Arboretum.

Or maybe it's like relying solely on analytics to decide on going for two in he 2nd quarter of a tight, tough game. 🙄 😉

Want to know how to get people to show up to a museum in Bloomington, Indiana? Get a world renowned architect to design it. I think the Palmer Museum is very nice, but it doesn't stand out on it's own. Will have to have an impressive collection and exhibits; maybe an artist in residence too - a no brainer would be an Aaron Maybin exhibit.

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The Palmer Museum of Art at Penn State will nearly double its footprint, offer improved accessibility, and debut a host of amenities when its new 73,000-square-foot building opens to the public on June 1, 2024. The state-of-the-art facility, located in The Arboretum at Penn State, will include 20 galleries, new educational and event spaces, a museum store and café, a sculpture path and outdoor terraces.

Designed by Allied Works and landscape architect Reed Hilderbrand, the new Palmer Museum of Art will hold a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification.

The opening of the new museum will mark the debut of Dale Chihuly’s “Lupine Blue Persian Wall,” a site-specific installation inspired by the Arboretum. The 13-foot installation spans 35 feet and anchors the museum’s feature staircase. The Palmer Museum also will reveal a number of new acquisitions by artists such as Fernando “Coco” Bedoya, Joseph Delaney, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Rodrigo Lara, David MacDonald, Malcolm Mobutu Smith, Toshiko Takaezu, Akio Takamori, Kukuli Velarde, Patti Warashina, Purvis Young, Malcah Zeldis and Arnold Zimmerman.

LEED Schmeed, who benefitted from building the Big Dip Museum? Don't be looking over there or over there, look behind the curtain -- look at who built it. These projects are just another example of the university being a piggy bank for 'preferred vendors' who happen to have connections to our glorious leaders. Onion Dipper played the game beautifully and secured himself a retirement package.

Does Molly enjoy Eric’s retirement package? A second erection could have made for a larger package.

And they haven’t decided what to do with the space? How about the Neeli Bendapudi Grand Cathedral of DEIB. o_O (and such)?

Not enough scones and lattes to make it to the third paragraph?

This project aims to transform the use/function of the facility, address differed maintenance backlog, and preserve and extend the life of the building. The renovated facility will create as many large General Purpose Classrooms (GPCs) and related GPC circulation and support spaces, as possible. As the available budget and space with the building allow, the remainder of the renovated building will be transformed into the following space/room types: art storage; informal learning space (aka open student study space); specialized classrooms and/or art studio spaces for the college of Arts and Architecture.
