PSU is slated to spend more than that - much more than that - just to "repurpose" (not renovate) the existing (old?) Palmer Museum. For what purpose? Who knows.Indiana’s art museum got its $30MM makeover a few years back with at least half the cost paid from a single donation, and it’s now over 100,000 sf. Reno was overseen by PSU Art History undergrad who was my HS friend and PSU roommate for two years (Brown PhD).

I.M. Pei designed IU's art museum. Here's what makes its $30M renovation a must-see.

Barry, it's refreshing to read something optimistic from you. That said, you can't put a price tag on the impact of 500,000 annual visits from world-wide art patrons.
$85,000,000 for that? Mussolini would love it. What a waste of money.See the link below for the article and video. From the article:
”UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — As the Palmer Museum of Art at Penn State celebrates its 50th anniversary, the Palmer looks ahead to a bright future in a new building at the Arboretum. A newly released fly-through animation offers an immersive 3D view of the $85 million facility. The Palmer created the two-and-a-half-minute video in collaboration with Allied Works and the Brooklyn Digital Foundry. The 71,254-square-foot facility will open in spring 2024.
The Palmer’s new building, designed by Allied Works, will double the museum’s exhibition space to 20 galleries; improve accessibility; bring inviting, natural light into the museum; and include the Palmer’s first educational and event spaces, a museum store and café, sculpture path, and outdoor terraces.”
I’m glad that they never miss an opportunity to cite the cost of the new museum.

When the final tally is in, I would expect the total real cost of that decision will be roughly $150 Million (within rounding error, anyway)

Certainly not without involving math - and LionJim isn't available.
I do.Want to know how to get people to show up to a museum in Bloomington, Indiana?
Old Palmer Reno:
$40 Million (at least), $800 per square foot (renovations)... and some other interesting snippets (some - like the Art Storage fiasco - that are "laugh, or cry?")

LEED Schmeed, who benefitted from building the Big Dip Museum? Don't be looking over there or over there, look behind the curtain -- look at who built it. These projects are just another example of the university being a piggy bank for 'preferred vendors' who happen to have connections to our glorious leaders. Onion Dipper played the game beautifully and secured himself a retirement package.
And they haven’t decided what to do with the space? How about the Neeli Bendapudi Grand Cathedral of DEIB.(and such)?
This project aims to transform the use/function of the facility, address differed maintenance backlog, and preserve and extend the life of the building. The renovated facility will create as many large General Purpose Classrooms (GPCs) and related GPC circulation and support spaces, as possible. As the available budget and space with the building allow, the remainder of the renovated building will be transformed into the following space/room types: art storage; informal learning space (aka open student study space); specialized classrooms and/or art studio spaces for the college of Arts and Architecture.
I don't know. Will need to ask when the time is right.Does Molly enjoy Eric’s retirement package? A second erection could have made for a larger package.
Not enough scones and lattes to make it to the third paragraph?
Look at the both of them. What do you think?Does Molly enjoy Eric’s retirement package? A second erection could have made for a larger package.
