Watching OSU/Wisc. Wisconsin had the ball 1st and goal with about 50 seconds left in the half. They scored an apparent TD but replay showed the receiver’s knee was down before crossing the goal line. After they reversed the call they took a 10 second runoff from the time the receiver’s knee went down.

I didn’t get the explanation. I understand the runoff when there’s a penalty but it doesn’t make sense when the refs goofed on a call and had to review it.

Why wasn’t that done at the end of the Clemson game? Klubnik tackled for a loss but refs said it was an incomplete pass. His knee was down before releasing the ball. Clock would have continued to run on the sack.

Taters took a timeout to avoid the 10 second runoff

All I can find online is that there is a 10 second runoff if there is less than a minute left in either half and a foul is committed.

Why is there a runoff though when the team had nothing to do with the stoppage? Why is the team penalized for the ref's mistake?
Because the clock would have kept running if the correct call was made. They corrected the call, and instead of getting a free time out, the team either has to take a time out or have the clock run. It tries to even the the field so that neither team gains an advantage due to a bad call.

Extremely unlikely Wisc would have let 10 seconds tick off though.

If the refs can’t do their job, don’t see why anyone gets penalized for it
