At 133 I don't see any obvious choice for next year. Could be a transfer but I was wondering if Betencourt will join the team and give it a go at 133. Thoughts?

Once Spencer graduates and comes to the NLWC, Ayala will hit the portal to follow and train with him, Roman & Gilman.

Just planting the seed for the rumor trees.

>> edit I forgot to insert the necessary joke emojis so folks would not take it literally. ;):p:ROFLMAO:

I have a hard time seeing this happen. He is at the top of the mountain in Iowa. Those crazy fans will never forgive him for leaving for the enemy. The HWC will be his kingdom and he knows it. When the Brands retire he will have a job for life. Just can't see him leaving with all that pressure.

look at Snyder? Top of the international/Olympic wrestling mountain vs top of the Iowa mountain? Very different levels.

We need an Elite 125 pounder. Haven’t had one since Nico graduated. Should be priority #1 right now in recruiting. Iowa is difficult because they have a very defensive style. Cael and staff will work on good set up’s and angles moving forward. Any elite recruit who would go to Iowa is beyond me. If you’ve noticed their wrestlers don’t improve much at all throughout their careers. Gilman will tell you all about it.

If Howard is truly healthy and has no trouble making weight he will make a run next year.

Yes I know. Those 2 are MUST gets for our team. After last night one would think they would definitely want to wrestle in a program that goes out to score points oppose to being all defensive. NIL $$$$ will play a huge factor. Hopefully our bigger donors in wrestling will step up. We definitely have the donors available.

They were both on the USA U17 World Team that went to Rome last summer (along with Kasak, Sealy, and Ryder) and brought home gold. They have international and Olympic aspirations. NLWC is the place to be.

Exactly no question. It’s gonna take $$$$ from our Donors though. We do in fact have some great rich donors for wrestling. Hopefully we can afford them. That would be HUGE for our program moving forward.

that's inaccurate.

Nico graduated after the 2015-16 season. Since then we've had:

- Nick Suriano, who was excellent as a freshman. Alas, he got injured late in the season, and then elected to transfer during the offseason
- the following year we unexpectedly needed a replacement at 125. Carson Kuhn was the late addition, but he did not place at B1Gs or make it to NCAAs
- the following year PSU was still recovering from Suriano's unexpected transfer, and Devin Schnupp manned 125. He did not place at B1Gs or make it to NCAAs
- the following year PSU had Brody Teske, but he redshirted. Brandon Meredith manned the weight, but he did not place at B1Gs or make it to NCAAs
- Robbie Howard manned the spot the next season, as a true freshman. He placed at B1Gs, and made it to NCAAs
- the following year, Drew Hildebrandt transferred in for the 2nd semester. He did pretty well, but ran into issues at B1Gs and at NCAAs (though he placed 10th at the former and qualified for the later). Interestingly, he lost to Brady Teske in the NCAA consolations (Teske had transferred to Northern Iowa)

Suriano and Howard were elite. Unfortunately for PSU, Suriano transferred out after his freshman year, which set PSU back at that weight for a few years. And while Howard was/is elite, he has had shoulder injury issues which have interrupted his career at PSU.

PSU has loaded up on lightweights in the 2023 recruiting class, with Davis, Nasdeo, and Wentzel all likely to be in the mix at 125 next year, as well as Howard, assuming that his rehab continues to go well.

Lilledahl and Forrest are on the radar.

Two amazing wrestlers, and both have visited PSU.

Lilledahl is the more likely of the two to have a chance at 125 or 133. He's a junior in HS, so we should know what he plans to do in the next 6-9 months.

Forrest is a freshman in HS, so he's a long way from making a college decision (one would presume). Weight projections are always speculative that many years out, but the folks I've talked to about him think he's most likely to be a middleweight.

Have to believe Bassett is in the mix as well although it's hard to tell where he might be leaning for college. I think he is a sophomore this year, but am uncertain given his status of being ineligible to compete in PIAA's. He is likely to be in that 125/133 range for college.

Bo is a freshman in high school. As such, projections on his college weight are pretty speculative at this point. He's wrestling 114 this year. If he were wrestling that weight as a junior or senior, I probably would agree that he's likely "to be in that 125/133 range for college." Since he's just a freshman, it would not surprise me if he were heavier than that by the time he's in college.

FWIW, he was at the BJC for the PSU - Iowa dual this past Friday.

👍🏻 Thanks….yeah, as a freshmen, hard to tell for sure. Some great PA kids as options in the future. We are incredibly blessed with the entire situation at Penn State. It is the Mecca of wrestling in the country now and for the foreseeable future.

I hate hyping a high school freshman up even more. However, it would be negligent to not mention that Jax Forrest entered the recent Edinboro Open, @ 125, and wrestling against college wrestlers, he took 1st place.

That is some amazing accomplishment by freshman Forrest!! Wonder how big he becomes as obviously most 14 or 14 year old boys are still growing. He appears to be a rare talent and future star!!
A lot of the powerhouse sports schools (private schools) “redshirt” their athletes. So, many freshman are not 14. Not sure about Forrest?

Public schools do it too...actually their parents do it. They have their kid start Kindegarten a year late, have them held back etc.

I know. It’s common with the privates to have them repeat 8th grade so they are a year older before they start their freshman year. Many times it’s when the student is enrolling in a private high school from a public school. My son encounters it in lacrosse a lot.

I repeated seventh grade when I went from public school in Bucks county to private school. I wish I had great sports story to pass along. I was just a lousy student with ADD and my grandparents had the money. I will forever by grateful!!

Glad it was beneficial for you. As you said, completely different circumstances.

The PIAA is making this tougher to do in Pennsylvania, at least at schools covered by the PIAA. A number of private schools are members of the PIAA, though not all private schools in PA are PIAA schools. They (the PIAA) just adopted the rule:

Won't the parents adjust and have their child repeat 7th grade instead of 8th? Also, maybe they get a doctor's diagnosis (thinking dyslexia) to support repeating a grade?

Even though he wrestles at Sem, isn't Lilledahl from Missouri? I have no inside knowledge but I would assume Mizzou Coach Smith is also in heavy on Lilledahl who is quite a prospect. As a Jr, he was the #2 seed at Dec-22's Walsh Ironman and beat the #1 seed, the aforementioned Frosh Jax Forrest, in SV.

They'd have to repeat 5th or earlier.

Can't imagine trying that doctor's note trick -- easy responses, he had sudden onset dyslexia? Couldn't diagnose it until age 12? Etc. (Similar questions for most conditions.) Good luck proving a need there.

Maybe PIAA would grant a waiver for a lengthy hospitalization. But if you're a parent, are you relying on PIAA to do anything?

Yes, he's from STL. Attended Christian Brothers (same school as Henson). Followed his coach to Seminary.

Every college coach in the country is or will be after him. The bigger questions are if he wants to return to the midwest for college, or wants to stay east, or is flexible. Also if he sees prep school as a gateway to the Ivies.
