expect.. I'm still buying we have a better than average SEC coach ..along with a better than average strength coach.. I think they are both SEC championship caliber.. but you "stars don't matter" folks better start coming to grips with the facts...

AND.. if CJ riding around in a rover with his mamma and her new job doesn't get the NCAA's attention, nothing ever will.. all things equal and on the normal up and up, we beat OM in recruiting for obvious reasons but when rovers and cushy jobs start getting into the mix, well you see what happens...

if we were to put a pretty good fence around Miss, THEN we would take the next step with a decent coach at the helm... but maybe the sec heavy weights are going to turn a blind eye to ole miss keeping things in check?....make sure another SEC contender doesn't start putting heat on the SEC powers that are? as long as we keep on having to split with ole miss, it keeps us both from starting something great?

Sell...We need a superstar. We need a Brett Favre or a Jerry Rice to go along with what we have now. That is how we will take the next step imo. We need to catch lightning in a bottle aka Cam Newton. Once we do that we will have a chance to turn the tide for good and elevate our recruiting classes year in and year out.

Disagree. Having that superstar only takes you to that next level briefly. The recruiting tide won't ever turn completely.

And also, I think that even if either school dominates in-state recruiting for an extended period, we would still more than likely be less talented than Alabama and LSU just in the West. Those schools draw from a better/deeper talent base. You can close the gap enough that a few bounces and good coaching can overcome them, but even dominating in-state recruiting wouldn't level the playing field on talent.

I don't know that Mullen realized how thin the talent is in Mississippi. For a state with this population, it's a good pool, but compared to other surrounding states our talent pool is shallow.

Call it a defeatist attitude if you like, but years and years of history supports it. It's not the coaches. It's not administration. It's the fact that we are at a disadvantage when it comes to the competitors we face. If we were combined into one school, we would have a better shot, and we would probably win a few championships, but we still likely wouldn't have what LSU and Alabama have over time.

Mullen, I think, is starting to figure that out. You are going to be hard pressed to build a championship team at either of our schools, and even if you do, it's not something you're likely to be able to sustain.

(arguably) weaker recruiting bases and no real long term tradition to speak of. If they can do it, why not MSU/OM?

Bc they don't play in the SEC west.

I think we will see improvement in recruiting with success on the field. If we can go bowling this year and next, I see a snowball effect.

..I get sick of reading all the whining over recruiting.

The irony is a bunch of 2 star rejects just took MSU into overtime--and couldn't contain a 17 yr. old QB whose only other offer than La Tech was probably a Div. II school--yet all the harping over recruiting as an instant gratification cure-all continues.

Currently, MSU has about as much talent as it will ever have.

MSU will never--under any circumstances--recruit to the level of Bama & LSU.

So, in order to make up for talent deficiencies, it leaves it to the coaches & players to bring passion & desire to a game.

You know, the same passion & desire La Tech brought to Scott Field Sat. night.

a phariah on SPS (sorry bruiser), i think he's fundamentally right. neither of us will dominate like vaught did. over 5-6 yrs we will pretty much split the talent. some yrs you'll do better some yrs we will, if for no other reason than an imbalance of "msu kids" or "ole miss kids' in a class.

i do think msu can't afford to come up short like last yr.. ya'll only got 2 (?) of the dandy dozen? if that continued it would be a problem. but odds are it won't.

bottom line is that its all about the right coaching staff and leadership. you've got to have 'enough" sec players, but its what you do with them that counts. the concern last yr might have raised for msu is,,,,can mullen get "enough" of them. i'd say probably so. he apparently can coach them. ya'll consistently look tough and well coached.
