2 questions about favre and QB's this season

does our offer to favre mean we intend to not sign any other qb's? is that pretty much a guarantee?...

and secondly.. was our staff so confident that newton was ours, we failed to prepare for a back up plan?

that thread showing nothing but newton and (8 or so) 2 star QB's seems to worry me somewhat...

based on how long mullen has been here so far, I do think he deserves a pass as of right now based on the offense he was forced into... he looked at our qb's, wr's and came up with the best plan to put points on the board.. And I'm damned glad he did... .hopefully things will start to change with russell and whoever else can hit some receivers and that, along with mullen's resume will put us in a better situation going forward

We tested the waters on a LOT of QBs.

One thing Mullen can't be accused of is not having a backup plan. He has backups to backups at every slot and is still keeping them warm. Quality is obviously going to decline as you go down your list, but he is prepared at least.

MSU will rarely, if ever, sign a top flight QB from outside the state of MS. The only name I can come up with is Rodney Hudson and he was a colossal bust.

We targeted Newton, Brunetti, and Mason and we lost them all. We even tried to get Jacoby Walker after he decommitted from Kansas so the staff wasn't lacking effort. It's just not going to happen until we can prove to have a competent passing offense.

Favre is the only QB in the state worthy of an offer so we took him. I give kudos to the staff for not giving him an early offer, knowing we could probably get him later in the process if we missed on our main targets.

As for Newton, yes our staff was extremely confident we were going to get Newton as late as Dec. 29th.

The only way we sign another QB is if we swing Brunetti which seems like a longshot.

If Russell pans out, none of this will matter.

not that he was highly recruited but he did have another SEC offer from Kentucky and few other decent schools outside the SEC. And he did become the all-time winningest QB in the history of the school. But I agree overall our QB recruiting outside MS has been rather abysmal.

is how costly is the offer anyways? what do we lose by offering him?

some seem to be thinking that this was just God awful and we are going to pay some kind of price by giving him a schollie.. are we going to miss out at this point on another athlete because of the offer?

just think of the potential if this guy works out.. . nice pub.. maybe brett throws us a bone or two.. you never know..

kind of like doubling down with a 10 or 11 and the dealer has a 4 if you ask me...

I think most of this reaction has to do with Tyson Lee, people think because both are short that Farve will end up as ****** as Lee. I don't agree with it but If i'd have to guess that is what this is about.

its only one scholarship and its highly unlikely his signing would scare off any other QBs that would be worth taking. The only negative at all is if we ended up short a scholarship in the end for somebody else that we really need at some other position and I just don't see that happening.

everyone is missing on this offer.

It is natural for everyone to compare Favre to Tyson Lee due their similar height. But what everyone is missing is that with Tyson Lee, he was the only capable QB we had on the team the past two seasons, therefore he was about all we had to play. Favre won't be thrown into the same situation that Lee was. If Russell plays up to his capabilities, then Favre will have time to develop and learn Mullen's system and would be a competant backup to Russell. If he happens to beat out Russell and Relf the next 2 seasons that Relf is here, then he will have either performed better than anyone is giving him credit for being able to do or Russell and Relf will have bombed and Favre would be the best QB on the roster.

Either way, I think it's worth a shot.

farve will be no better than lee....and here's why...they are the same height and speed.....and think about what tyson did in junior college.....he set records for crying out loud...national records....they are both over achievers....but hey, this is the sec's defenses we're talking about...not mendenhall's

And or those of you, 97.5 percent, farve did play in a mullen type offense for the last three years. The kid does know how to throw to a open receiver, how to look off a covered receiver and find the open receiver. I have watched him since his 1st game as a sophmore and the kid is special.

All this negativity about signing Favre is not really about Favre at all. It is the huge hangover we have as a result of losing Newton.

My bet is that if we hadn't signed Favre, these boards would be dominated with comments about why Mullen was sitting on his butt and hadn't offered him yet.

Sooner we get over the fact that Newton will be the Auburn QB next year.....the better off we will be.

If we want to get pissed about something.....lets get pissed about the fact we don't have a RB to replace Dixon....thats what we need.....we are in much better shape at QB than we were last year!!

but the best available even though he is not the desired height. Mullen tried to get the better qb, but just not in the cards this year. We got a good one last year and hopefully next year we will add a good one.
