Fred comes off the bench and gives Man U the lead. 3-2 in the 70th minute.

Nice attack by United.

I’m an Everton supporter. You’ll never see me type that 😂😂

Oh I forgot about that team that is on the 'other-side' of town!

Poor little step-child that they are.

You should make the trip if you're into it. I've gone to Goodison twice now. Anfield looks incredible. I walked around the outside of it one afternoon my first trip there. Haven't attended a match there, but I'm sure it's a blast. I've been to Goodison a few times, Stamford Bridge, the Ethiad and Vicarage Road. I suggest anyone makes the trip if you enjoy it. I'm definitely taking my boys when they get older.

Champions League Round of 16 on CBS.

Chelsea 1-0 Lille at 39’. It’s been a remarkable display of technique from both sides, glorious soccer.
In some absolutely brilliant halftime analysis, the commentator informed me that the outcome would depend upon on how well the teams play in the second half. Armed with the benefit of that insight, lacking that level of expertise, I‘ll be much better able to comprehend what is happening on the pitch.

What gets me in American football broadcasts is that the announcers invariably explain the overtime rules as if they had been first written down only the day before.

The CBSSN talking heads were saying that the Premier League is clearly the top league with the best teams, that one of the four PL teams still standing (MC, ManU, Chelsea, Reds) would end up winning the Champions League. Chelsea outclassed Lillie in the second half.

I remember watching a Thursday night college football game about ten years ago. Tie score. About three minutes left in the game. Commentator tells me that "Whatever happens in the next few minutes will decide the game." It was then, at that exact moment, after 30+ years of following football, that I finally understood the game.

One of my favorite announcer moments, that I posted on another forum in May of 2018…

The following sequence just happened between the two announcers doing the Boise St-Washington softball game on ESPNU (and the fact that I'm watching this game at 1:19am with no rooting interest just proves that I'd pretty much watch any live sporting event over anything else I can find on TV).

To set the scene...Washington is up 5-0 in the top of the 5th. Boise had 1st and 2nd with no outs, and a 3-0 count. I swear to God that I just transcribed this word for word:

PBP Announcer: "And again, Plain can't find the zone. Three and O...Any chance you swing 3 and O if you're Cervantes?"
Color Announcer: "No, not after, what is it, a four pitch walk to the batter prior...You have to remember, Home Runs are rally killers."
PBP: "You've got to start it all over again, you're right"
Color: "A lot of people make fun of me, they're like, no they're not, you just want runs, and I'm like, no, when you're down by more than the amount of runs that the Home Run would put up on the board, then, I think they're rally killers. You want a couple of hits."
PBP: "I agree with you on that."
Color: "Yea"

Ground out, strikeout, ground out, and it's 5-0 heading to the bottom of the 5th...

Tottenham follows up a victory over MC with a loss to Burnley. Talk about the classic letdown spot.

Liverpool now with 3 pts of MC and mathematically control their own destiny. Even if you don't like the Reds, would be nice to see this race stay close until the end.

Should be a fun race for the top 4 as well. I like Arsenal's chances @LionJim

Arsenal (42 points, 6th place) v Wolves (40, 7th) tomorrow, Thursday, is important for both squads.

Most important game of the season to date. Real separation from both wolves and spuds with a victory and games in hand vs manU and W Ham. 4th would be a real possibility, 3rd not out of the question. COYG!!!

After Tom's announcement of the Wolves lead, I put the game out of mind (I don't Peacock) and only just now learned of the Gunners victory. I needed that lift.

What a game! Can't say it wasn't deserved either, they bossed the entire game. Well done, proud of this team's effort and perseverance. Both have been lacking over the last few seasons. COYG!!!

Man U played last night, Wednesday. Saturday is a quick turnaround. If United loses, Gunners will be one point behind with three games in hand. (They currently sit 4th and 5th.)

The math probably tripped you up ;)
Actually, that’s exactly what happened.

You’d be surprised at the mistakes I can make. Doctoral students in graduate mathematics programs typically need to take qualifying exams, which at Maryland consisted of three four-hour exams of six problems each, given MWF in a single week. Each exam is sixty points and forty points usually guarantees a pass (you have to pass each exam separately). After these exams, I would lie in bed in the middle of the night going over my proofs and, more often than not, taking points off in my head when I realized where I’d made a mistake. Nerve wracking. Anyway, this one time I bolted upright in bed when I realized I had put down “8+3=12” in the homology portion of the algebraic topology exam I had taken that morning. It probably only cost me a point but I remember being already in the low forties, so that was not a good night. Every mathematician has similar stories.
