I was waiting for Tom to make a post w/ the schedule, tv times, etc.

But a nice intro by Little League to get things rolling today (after a GREAT parade last night):

Please use this thread to discuss the 2024 LLWS.

Action starts today (8/14), with the Caribbean playing Mexico @ 1 pm EDT

Also on tap on opening day are:

New England vs. West @ 3 pm
Asia-Pacific vs. Canada @ 5 pm
Southeast vs. Midwest @ 7 pm

The PA state champions, Council Rock-Newtown, representing the Mid-Atlantic, start play on 8/15 @ 7 pm against the Southwest Region champ.

For those not familiar - this was across the river in Williamsport very close to Bowman Field (where the Yankees & Tigers will play Sunday night).

Yeah, PA has been a juggernaut in the Districts, Sections, States, and Regions. But I was worried about this TX team, and it appears it was not a good matchup for Council Rock-Newtown.

Tigers' plane just landed in Montoursville. Yankees due soon.

Council Rock-Newtown (PA/Mid-Atlantic) off to a good start. They've plated 4 runs in the bottom of the 1st against Washington (Northwest), with only 1 out.

Looks as though they (PA) 10-runned Washington, and won 12-2 in 4 innings. They'll next play on Tuesday, against the loser of Monday's game between Mountain Region and West Region

10 am: a resumption of the suspended game, top of the 2nd, Caribbean up on Australia, 3-0

I should clarify that tomorrow is an off day for the losers bracket teams. Winners bracket games go on.

Great game last night. The Tigers' Vierling was great - chasing down balls while mic-ed up. People are piling on the Yankee's reliever. Those were really good pitches that just got hit in the wrong spot. The double clutch throw home by the left fielder was the difference.

Williamsport looked great. Looks like everything went well. Can't ask for much more.

Next year - Mariners and Mets (again). Not sure why no Red Sox, Marlins, and other east coast teams that haven't been continue to be excluded.

This will probably change after today's games, but here's how I rank the US contenders at this point:

1) FL
2) HI
3) TX
4) NV
5) PA
6) NY

It's such a clunky bracket that if you lose your first game (like PA and NY), you're basically effed unless you have 4 or 5 great pitchers. The counter balance is that PA could win out and TX or FL could be done w/ only 1 loss come Thursday.

I like HI and FL today.

Tom - did you get to watch the plane landings - bus rides - South Williamsport interactions yesterday? I despise espn, but they really seem to do this well.

I watched a player from Chinese Taipei lose his cool in the dugout, his teammates had to hold him back.

I did not. Too many things on my plate on Sunday. I caught a couple of half innings of PA's game, and saw some of the Yankees walking threw the throngs of kids.

I did watch the aspects you're asking about last year (I think it was last year) when the Phillies participated in the MLB game. As you noted, ESPN does a really nice job with the LLWS coverage, and they really do capture the experience of the MLB players and coaches, and how they interact with the kids.

Losing the first game makes it very difficult to reach the US Championship game on Saturday. Council Rock Newtown will have to win 5 games in 6 days to get there. I can't imagine any of these teams having that kind of pitching depth.

Council Rock-Newtown (PA/Mid-Atlantic Region) falls in the Elimination Bracket to Hawaii, 3-1. The starting pitcher for Hawaii was dominant, though the home plate ump had a pretty wide and high strike zone.

Council Rock-Newtown was blanked until the 6th inning, when plated a run (double, advanced to 3rd on a passed ball, and then scored on a single).

CR-Newtown had a great run. Losing in the opening round put them in a tough spot, but they acquitted themselves quite well in their prior games in the Elimination Bracket.

most teams that get to the LLWS have one dominant pitcher, and several other pitchers that are very good. It is a clear advantage to a team that is in position to use their dominant pitcher against the opposing team's very good pitcher(s). The managers are in a hopeless situation in the Elimination Bracket, in that they have to win to stay in the LLWS, but they also want to keep their best pitchers as available as possible. (Basically, 11s & 12s have an 85-pitch max per game, while 10s have a 75-pitch max per game. In terms of days of rest, 1-20 pitches in a game and the pitcher can pitch the next day, 21-35 pitches in a game, and the pitcher needs 1 day of rest, 36-50 pitches in a game, and the pitcher needs to rest 2 days, 51-65 pitches in a game, and the pitcher needs to rest 3 days, 66-85 pitches in a game, and the pitcher needs to rest 4 days.) With the aforementioned mandatory days of rest, it is such an advantage to remain in the Winners Bracket.

For a tournament that didn't seem to have a lot of drama (at least on the USA side), that was fun. How much pitching will Lake Mary have left for tomorrow? It will be interesting to see how they respond after an improbable comeback. Coach needs to set a curfew tonight...lol
