Next on the schedule are the U23 World Championships. They'll be held from Oct. 21 to Oct. 27, in Tirana, Albania.

Representing the USA at 74 Kg is Mitchell Mesenbrink.

Let's not blame that. Takahashi was the better wrestler -- he's Japan's senior-level guy, won Senior Asian Games, beat Rassadin (Olympic 5th), beat Valiev (Olympic bronze), and barely lost to Zhamalov (Olympic gold) on a fleeing call with under 0:10 left.

Mesenbrink gives up too many easy scores against the top guys. We saw it against Hamiti, Carr, and Burroughs. It happened again today. It'll never likely hurt him again in college (who's left to take advantage?), but he does need to clean that up to achieve his senior-level goals.

Two excellent points. Takahashi wasn't just U23 elite, he was Senior level elite. Takahashi was the wrestler that most concerned me in terms of Mesenbrink's chances at U23.

Mesenbrink beats most people on a combination of skill, relentless attack, and excellent conditioning. He had no business beating Hamiti last season, as Hamiti scored repeatedly on him. Mesenbrink got lucky, so to speak, in that his conditioning was far superior than Hamiti's was, which enabled him to stage a great comeback. Mesenbrink's best defense is his relentless offense. He'll need to improve his D to be able to compete against elite wrestlers.
